EURO 2028 at Hampden Park: Scotland's Group, and the Quarter-Final That Comes from Dublin

Hampden Park has hosted more European finals than most countries have hosted tournaments: three European Cup finals, a UEFA Cup final, two Cup Winners' Cup finals, and four matches at EURO 2020 including two Scotland games. Zinédine Zidane's volley in the 2002 Champions League final happened here.

For EURO 2028 it gets six matches, three of which are probably Scotland's, and one of which arrives directly from Dublin.

Six matches, and Scotland's whole group

Three of those group fixtures carry F1, the Group F head, and UEFA's home-association allocation gives Scotland three matches at Hampden Park. Put the two together and Group F is Scotland's group, played in Glasgow, on 13, 17 and 21 June, provided Scotland come through qualifying.

The provision matters. UEFA has all four host nations play qualifying with no automatic berth, and only two reserved places for the best-ranked hosts who fall short in the groups.

Getting there is a suburban train, not an expedition

Hampden sits in Mount Florida on the south side of Glasgow, and the stadium's own visitor information is refreshingly specific: it is a five-minute walk from both Mount Florida and King's Park stations, with trains running from Glasgow Central. Hampden points visitors at ScotRail to check services before travelling, which is sensible advice on any matchday and essential on a 21:00 CEST kick-off that finishes at 22:00 local.

The Glasgow Subway does not reach the ground, so it is trains or buses. Two stations sharing one crowd means the walk out is busier than the walk in, and it means the decision about which station to aim for is worth making with live data rather than a guess.

The Dublin connection

Here is the fixture that makes Hampden the most interesting venue in the tournament for anyone thinking about their phone.

1 July, Hampden Park: Dublin round of 16 winners vs Birmingham round of 16 winners.

The Dublin round of 16 tie is on 27 June. The Hampden quarter-final is on 1 July. The winner then plays the second semi-final at Wembley on 5 July. A team that comes through Dublin can therefore run Dublin, Glasgow, London inside nine days, and so can the people following it.

Two of those three cities are in the United Kingdom. The first is not.

What a Hampden match day uses

Glasgow is a moderate data day. The rail leg is short, the walk is short, and the city centre is compact enough that you are rarely navigating from scratch.
