Best eSIM for New Zealand 2026: 10GB on Spark for $7.95

Updated Oct 22, 2026Pricing verified Oct 22, 202615 sources cited

The best eSIM for New Zealand on a one- or two-week trip is our country plan on Spark, where 10GB for 15 days costs $7.95. If Australia is on the same ticket, take the Asia-Pacific plan instead. Visitors are back: on 14 October 2026, Stats NZ reported that August visitor arrivals reached 99% of their 2019 level, about 248,700 people.

    Key takeaways

    • Our country plans run on Spark, and 10GB for two weeks costs $7.95. That covers most trips.
    • Australia next? Our regional Asia-Pacific plan covers both, with 10GB from $8.95. One eSIM works in both countries.
    • The local dollar is at an 18-month low against the greenback. Your budget stretches further.
    • New flights start this season. One is a direct link to Sydney's new airport.
    • Your maps should be offline before a walk. Many tracks have no signal at all.
    • The travel authority and visitor levy apply to most visitors. Australian passport holders pay neither.

Why is 2026–27 a good time to visit New Zealand?

Visitor numbers are back to 2019 levels, the local dollar is cheap, and new flights start within weeks. The statistics agency counted 18,400 more visitors this August than last. Australia sent 125,600 of them, its biggest August yet. Taiwan and Singapore set August records too. In the year to August, 3.71 million visitors came.

The regions feel it. On 16 October, the public broadcaster reported that the Waikato region expects its best summer since the pandemic. Hobbiton, the film set, told the broadcaster its overseas visitors have been back at pre-pandemic levels for two years.

Your money goes further too. On 13 October, Trading Economics had the local dollar at about 56 US cents, its lowest since April 2025. At that rate, 100 local dollars of motel, ferry or jetboat costs about 56 US dollars.

Here are the dates worth planning around.

Three of these change how you can plan a trip, because each one opens a route or a ride that did not exist this time last year.

Auckland to Western Sydney. The new airport west of the city gets three return flights a week from 26 October. Fares start at 310 local dollars one way, seat only, per the airline's newsroom.

Christchurch to Tokyo. Three flights a week leave for Tokyo from 28 November, per the airport's schedule. A Japan add-on now fits on one ticket, and our guide to travelling to Japan in 2027 covers the far end. The same airport adds a Singapore service on 28 October, which our eSIM guide for that region covers.

A new cycle trail. On 22 October, the regional trail hub said 17 km of the Kawarau Gorge cycle route opens on 25 October. It runs from a car park in Cromwell to a bridge near an old gold mining centre. The rest of the gorge stays closed while building continues.

Which New Zealand eSIM plan fits your trip?

For most visitors, 10GB covers one to two weeks of maps, messages and photo uploads. Ten days costs $6.95. Fifteen days costs $7.95. Spark was the listed network on every one of our country plans on 22 October 2026.

TripLight use (maps, messages)Typical useHeavy use (video, hotspot)
    5 days, Auckland or Queenstown break5GB, $4.9510GB, $6.9520GB, $12.95
    10 days, one island5GB, $4.9510GB, $6.9520GB, $13.95
    15 days, both islands5GB, $5.9510GB, $7.9520GB, $14.95
    30 days, campervan loop5GB, $5.9510GB, $7.9530GB, $21.95
    New Zealand plus Australia, 15 daysAsia-Pacific 5GB, $5.95Asia-Pacific 10GB, $8.95Asia-Pacific 20GB, $15.95

Plans start from $4.95 USD, and the 3GB for 15 days also costs $4.95 if you mostly stay on hotel wifi.

The 15-day and 30-day 10GB plans cost the same $7.95. On a three-week trip, take the longer one. Long drives burn data on navigation, so lean towards the "typical" column even if you rarely stream at home.

Does an eSIM work in Queenstown and on the Great Walks?

Your eSIM works wherever Spark has signal, and many tracks and mountain roads have none. We ran no coverage tests and make no claim about rural or backcountry reception.

The conservation department is direct about its tracks. Its page for the Milford Track says there is no cell phone reception on the track, and recommends a distress beacon or a satellite device. On Tongariro's circuit, reception is reasonably good, but some sections have none. One hut on that circuit has little or no coverage.

Before a walk or a long drive between towns:

    • Download offline maps in your maps app for the whole region, not just the trailhead.
    • Save the track page and your hut bookings as screenshots or PDFs.
    • Hire a personal locator beacon for multi-day walks, as the department advises.
    • Sync in town. Messages and photo backups catch up as soon as you are back in range.

Tongariro's circuit has one change for 2026/27. It is a full Great Walk again after a hut rebuild. It now starts at one car park and ends at the village, because the link between them stays closed after the 2025 fire.

Do visitors from Australia and the UK need an NZeTA, and what does it cost?

Travellers on an Australian passport need no visa and no electronic travel authority (NZeTA). British travellers need an NZeTA and pay the visitor levy, but can stay up to 6 months.

The immigration service (INZ) keeps a list of travellers who do not need one, and anyone on an Australian passport is on it. Permanent residents of Australia normally do need one, per the before-you-travel page. The visa waiver list includes the UK, the US and Canada. These visa waiver visitors can stay up to 3 months, or 6 months on a UK passport.

    NZeTA via immigration.govt.nzNZD 23As above
International Visitor Conservation and Tourism LevyNZD 100Most visitors, paid with the NZeTA

Figures come from the INZ fee and levy table, which set the levy at 100 local dollars from 1 October 2024. Apply only through the official app or website, where these are the full government charges.

Australians are the biggest group by far, with 51% of August 2026 arrivals. If your carrier at home offers roaming here, compare its daily charge with our $6.95 10GB plan before you go. Kiwis heading overseas can read our roaming cost comparison.

Can one eSIM cover New Zealand and Australia for the 2027 Rugby World Cup?

Yes. Our regional plan covers both countries and ten more on one eSIM. A month with 20GB costs $16.95.

The tournament is in Australia, and a week across the water is an easy add-on. New Zealand's pool games run from 2 to 15 October 2027 across three host cities. The final is in Sydney on 13 November. Our tournament eSIM guide covers each city.

Pick the plan by the whole trip, because the data allowance is shared across every country:

    • One week in each country: the regional 10GB for 15 days at $8.95.
    • A month at the tournament: 20GB for 30 days at $16.95. Heavy users can take 30GB for $22.95.
    • One country per trip: the country plan is cheaper for the same data.

What does the plan not do?

The country plan gives you mobile data and nothing else. Check these limits before you buy.

    • No local phone number. Keep your home line on for calls and text codes, and call locals over messaging apps.
    • One network. We ran no speed tests, so we make no claim about how it compares with others on your route.
    • A compatible phone. Your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to your home carrier. Our eSIM compatibility guide lists the models.

How do you set it up before you fly?

Buy the plan a few days before you leave. Lotsotravel is an independent travel eSIM provider. The service is website-only, with no app needed. Your QR code arrives by email and on the website, so you can install it at home on wifi.

Leave the eSIM line off until you land, then switch it on and turn on data roaming for that line only. Your usual line stays in the phone for calls.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for New Zealand for a two-week trip?+
A New Zealand country plan with 10GB. On 22 October 2026 our 10GB for 15 days cost $7.95 and ran on Spark. If you stream little and lean on hotel Wi-Fi, 5GB for 15 days costs $5.95. If you will hotspot a laptop or upload a lot of video from Milford Sound and Queenstown, 20GB for 15 days costs $14.95. Every plan is data only.
Can one eSIM cover New Zealand and Australia?+
Yes, our 12-country Asia-Pacific plan covers both, plus Japan, Singapore and eight more. On 22 October 2026, 10GB for 15 days cost $8.95 and 20GB for 30 days cost $16.95. One QR code works on both sides of the Tasman, and the data allowance is shared across every country, so size it for the whole trip rather than for each leg.
Does an eSIM work on New Zealand's Great Walks?+
Often not, and that is the track, not the eSIM. The Department of Conservation says there is no cell phone reception on the Milford Track, and that the Tongariro Northern Circuit has reasonable reception with some sections that have none. Download offline maps and track notes before you set off, and carry a distress beacon or satellite messenger as DOC advises.
How much do the NZeTA and visitor levy cost in 2026?+
Immigration New Zealand charges NZD 17 for a traveller NZeTA through its mobile app and NZD 23 through its website. Most visitors also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy of NZD 100, paid at the same time. That makes NZD 117 by app or NZD 123 online. Travellers on an Australian passport need neither.
Do UK visitors need an NZeTA for New Zealand?+
Yes. The UK is on Immigration New Zealand's visa waiver list, so British citizens do not need a visitor visa but must hold an NZeTA before they travel. UK passport holders can stay up to 6 months, against 3 months for most other visa waiver nationalities. Apply through the official app or immigration.govt.nz a few days before you fly.
Do I get a New Zealand phone number with a travel eSIM?+
No. Our New Zealand plans give you mobile data only. Keep your home SIM switched on for calls and for login codes sent by text, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or other data apps to call people in New Zealand. If you need a local number for a long stay or work, a New Zealand carrier SIM is the better fit.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

Lotsotravel prices come from our live v3 product API (/api/v3/products?country=NZ and ?region=asia), read on 22 October 2026. We quote the VIP price, which is what you pay when you arrive through a link on this blog, and fixed-data plans only. The network claim covers our New Zealand country plans only (countryCount 1 in the API): every one of them listed Spark on that date. Our supplier's catalogue can change, which is what the carrierVerified date tracks.

Visitor figures come from the Stats NZ International travel release for August 2026, published 14 October 2026. Flight dates come from the Air New Zealand newsroom, Christchurch Airport's published schedule and an AeroRoutes schedule report for China Southern. Track dates and phone reception notes come from the Department of Conservation. Entry costs come from Immigration New Zealand's fee and levy table.

What this post does not measure: we ran no speed tests in New Zealand, we did not test signal on any road or track, and we do not compare customer support. The plans are data only, with no New Zealand phone number.
