    The setup, start to finish

Australia is a single-country tournament spread over a continent. Here is the setup that keeps you online from the opening ceremony to the final.

    Full step-by-step guide
    1

    Pick one plan, not seven

Every host city is inside Australia, so one Australia eSIM covers the whole tournament. Travelling on from New Zealand, Japan or Hong Kong? The Asia+ regional plan spans all of those on a single profile.

    Install before you fly

Buy ahead, wait for the email that your QR code is ready, then install over home Wi-Fi. Installing is not activating — the clock starts when you land in Australia.

    3

    Keep your number

Leave your home SIM on for calls, texts and 2FA codes, and set the eSIM as your data line. Turn data roaming off on the home line so it never bills you.

Australia is 4G and 5G only

The major carriers closed their 3G networks in 2024. A very old handset, or a 4G phone without VoLTE, can end up with data but no calls. Test a spare phone at home before you pack it.

Three time zones, two of them moving

Daylight saving starts on 3 October 2027 in NSW, Victoria and South Australia — but not in Queensland or Western Australia. Perth can sit three hours behind Sydney mid-tournament.

    Tickets and visas come first

General ticket sales open on 1 October 2026, first come first served. Most visitors also need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority before boarding — sort that early, not at the airport.

Rugby World Cup 2027 eSIM — FAQ

When and where is the 2027 Rugby World Cup?

Australia hosts from 1 October to 13 November 2027. Twenty-four teams play 52 matches across eight venues in seven cities: Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle and Townsville. The opening match is Australia v Hong Kong China at Perth Stadium on 1 October, and the final is at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 13 November.

Do I need a different eSIM for each host city?

No. Every venue is inside Australia, so a single Australia eSIM works in all seven host cities — unlike the 2026 football World Cup, where three countries meant three plans. Only add a second plan if your trip continues to New Zealand or Asia, and in that case the Asia+ regional plan covers Australia and 12 more destinations on one profile.

How much data will a match day use?

Budget 1–3 GB for a full match day covering maps, a rideshare app, your mobile ticket, group chats and a few clips. For one match plus a few days in the city, a 3–5 GB plan is the usual pick. Following a team through the pool stage and into the knockouts is closer to 20 GB or an unlimited plan.

Will my phone work on Australian networks?

Almost certainly, but check one thing first: Australia's 3G networks closed in 2024, so the country runs on 4G and 5G only. A handset that relies on 3G for calls — or a 4G phone without VoLTE — can end up with data but no calling. Any phone bought in the last few years is fine; a very old spare or a grey-import handset is worth testing before you fly.

How long can one plan last across a six-week tournament?

The longest Australia plan runs 30 days, and the tournament runs six weeks. Fans staying the full distance buy a 30-day plan for the pool stage and a second, shorter plan for the knockouts, which also lets you size the second one to how far your team actually gets.

Do I need a visa to visit Australia for the tournament?

Almost every visitor needs a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority before boarding. Eligible passport holders apply for the ETA (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app, and it is normally granted quickly — but it is a document to sort out early, not at the airport. Check your own passport's requirements with the Department of Home Affairs.
