Record crowds, a finished tower, and tickets that sell out months ahead
Spain had a record year in 2025 and 2026 has been busier still around Barcelona, where the Sagrada Família's Tower of Jesus Christ was inaugurated in June. The practical consequence for a traveller is simple: the headline sights are now advance-booking destinations, and the difference between a good week and a frustrating one is usually made three months before departure.
The Sagrada Família finally has its crowning tower
At 172.5 metres, the Tower of Jesus Christ is the basilica's tallest. It was blessed and inaugurated on 10 June 2026, the hundredth anniversary of Antoni Gaudí's death, in a ceremony led by Pope Leo XIV.2,10
The Alhambra, booked early
Granada's Nasrid palace complex sells timed tickets through the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife's own site, the only official seller. Summer weekends and Semana Santa routinely sell out weeks ahead.3
Three regions take most of the visitors
Catalonia (20.1 million), the Balearics (15.7 million) and the Canaries (15.7 million) led arrivals in 2025, a useful map of where the crowds concentrate and where they don't.1
Our take: if your dates are inside July or August, treat Madrid, inland Andalucía and the north coast as the value picks. Cantabria and Asturias in August are cooler and a fraction of the price of the Balearics.
2025 set the record: 96.8 million international tourists
Spain's national statistics institute counted 96.8 million international tourists in 2025, up 3.2% on 2024 and an all-time high for the series. The UK (19.1 million), France (12.8 million) and Germany (12.0 million) sent the most.1
Winter is not the off season everywhere
Spain took 54.1 million international tourist nights in the first quarter of 2026, one in four of all such nights in the EU, thanks largely to the Canaries and the southern coast.4
Our take: May, early June and late September are the sweet spot for the cities. The Canaries invert the calendar: they are at their best exactly when the mainland is cold and cheap flights are scarce.
High-speed rail beats short flights
Renfe's AVE network links Madrid with Barcelona, Seville, Málaga, Valencia and Alicante; tickets are cheapest when released and rise as departure nears.5
Regional planning starts at the official portal
Turespaña's spain.info publishes the routes, opening calendars and regional festival dates that the private aggregators tend to reproduce late or incompletely.6
Our take: take the AVE between cities and rent a car only for rural Andalucía, Galicia or the Pyrenees. City-centre driving in Spain means restricted zones and paid parking, and the train is usually door-to-door faster anyway.
Biometric borders since April 2026
The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Non-EU visitors are registered with facial image and fingerprints at the external border instead of receiving a passport stamp.7
ETIAS has not started
The EU's travel authorisation is not in operation and no applications are being collected; a start date will be announced in advance.8

Free from fixed and mobile phones anywhere in the EU, reaching police, ambulance and fire brigade.9
Buy from the official ticket office
For the Alhambra in particular, resellers charge well above face value and some batches are non-transferable. The Patronato's own site is the reference point for prices and availability.3
Our take: eat on Spanish time rather than fighting it. Most kitchens outside tourist strips do not open for dinner until 20:30, and the 13:00–16:00 lunch is where the value menus are.
Spanish cities have some of the densest mobile networks in Europe, and you will lean on them: Renfe tickets, museum QR codes and the Alhambra's timed entry all live on your phone. Signal thins out in the Picos de Europa, parts of Extremadura and on ferry crossings to the Balearics. If you are driving inland Andalucía, download offline maps before you leave the motorway. The villages have coverage; the roads between them sometimes don't.
As soon as your dates are firm. Tickets go on sale months out through the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife's official site, and peak-season slots (summer weekends, Semana Santa, Spanish public holidays) sell out weeks in advance. Returned tickets do get released, so check back if your date shows sold out.3
It depends entirely on where you go. The 96.8 million arrivals in 2025 concentrate heavily in Catalonia, the Balearics and the Canaries. Inland Andalucía, Extremadura, Aragón and the north coast take a small fraction of that, and in shoulder season they feel unhurried.1
