The True Cost of stc Global Roaming in Europe (2026) vs. Lotsotravel eSIM

Fourteen days in Europe on stc's cheapest roaming data package costs SAR 287.50 (Saudi riyals), about $76.67 USD. The same fortnight on a Lotsotravel Europe eSIM is $14.95. That is the whole argument, and the rest of this piece is the arithmetic behind it.

stc, the Saudi Telecom Company, is not the villain of this series. No daily fee fires the moment your phone wakes up, and roaming never switches itself on when you land. A background photo sync can't run up a five-figure bill either, because Saudi Arabia's regulator forbids operators from switching roaming on without your permission. What stc sells instead is a set of prepaid buckets priced as a single worldwide tariff, and a worldwide tariff is by definition not a Europe price.

Two terms come up throughout. stc calls those buckets roaming packages: a fixed block of data, minutes or both that you activate before you fly and that expires after a set number of days. An eSIM is a SIM you download by scanning a QR code, so your phone can run it alongside your stc SIM.

We re-price carrier roaming against a Lotsotravel eSIM on every pricing refresh, and stc's numbers below were read off stc's own pages on 2026-09-07 and checked again on 2026-10-19. We work through what each package costs and what five real itineraries come to on both sides. Then comes the dual-SIM setup that keeps your Saudi number live for bank OTPs (one-time passcodes) and Absher, the government e-services app, while you pay eSIM prices. We close on what this comparison deliberately does not measure.

The two price tags, side by side

Both sides are prepaid and predictable, so the comparison comes down to price per gigabyte. On that measure, stc's best European tier costs roughly four times the eSIM, and its day pack about 14 times.

Where the money goes

stc publishes four roaming families, and the differences between them are worth ten minutes before you fly. Every price below includes 15% VAT.

Global Basic Roaming for Internet is data only, and it is the cheapest route to a European trip. Its activation codes are 6405, 6402, 6417 and 6403, sent to 900.

Global Basic Roaming for Calls is the voice companion, sold separately. Calls run SAR 1.03 per minute locally and to Saudi Arabia, with unlimited call receiving.

Global Premium Roaming bundles the two. Receiving calls is unlimited, but outgoing calls are still SAR 1.03 per minute. On the monthly tier, a fair-usage cap applies: past 5GB in a day, speed drops to a 512 Kbps throttle.

Global Plus Roaming is listed on stc's roaming prices page. Each tier pairs unlimited data under a 5GB fair-use policy with a block of minutes, from 100 to 450.

Four things follow from that structure, and they are what set your cost.

First, the price is global, not European. SAR 218.50 buys the same 15GB in Lyon as it does in Kuala Lumpur. That's a convenience on a multi-region trip. On a Europe-only trip it's a premium, because you are paying a worldwide-average rate for the world's densest and most competitive roaming market.

Second, the tiers jump, and the gaps are expensive. Nothing sits between 2GB and 15GB, so a four-day city break needing 5GB has no matching tier. You either buy four day-packs at SAR 322, or one seven-day 15GB pack at SAR 218.50 and leave 10GB unused. Both are worse deals than they look on the per-gigabyte line.

Third, validity runs from activation, not from arrival. Activate a seven-day pack the evening before an early flight and you lose most of a day to the airport and the flight itself.

Fourth, the quoted prices include 15% VAT, which stc states on its own pages. That helps: the number you read is the number you pay, with no tax added at checkout.

What five real trips cost on each side

We priced five European itineraries on stc's cheapest available route for each. The other side is the Lotsotravel Europe regional plan, which covers 33 European countries on one eSIM. Lotsotravel prices are live at the verification date above.

The 4-day row is the one to look at twice. It shows the largest gap in the table, and the cause is the missing tier rather than stc's per-gigabyte rate. A traveller who needs 5GB has to buy 15GB, because nothing smaller runs longer than a day.

If you want unlimited data for a month rather than a 20GB bucket, compare like with like. stc's unlimited 30-day package is SAR 460 (~$122.67), against $18.95 for Europe 30GB Unlimited for 30 days. The eSIM is 85% cheaper. The two ceilings work differently, though. stc's published terms cap you at 5GB per day. Ours also reset daily but are lower: Europe 30GB Unlimited for 30 days is 1GB a day at full speed, then 128 kbps until the next day, and the 60GB and 90GB tiers are 2GB and 3GB a day. If your month abroad is heavy, price the 90GB Unlimited tier rather than assuming the cheapest one fits.

Two things worth knowing about stc's published numbers

First, stc's own two pages do not agree on the Global Basic data tiers. The Roaming Outside the Kingdom page shows a different set of allowances and validities: 5GB over two days, 10GB over four, 20GB over ten and 50GB over 30. Its Activation Code and Price columns are filled with a stray voice rate rather than actual prices. The International Calls page carries the same product with real prices and activation codes, and that is the version we priced. If you are buying, check the tier you are subscribing to in the myStc app rather than trusting either page alone.

Second, business lines are priced from different tables. stc's business Global Basic page lists the 15GB, 7-day tier at SAR 230 rather than SAR 218.50, and lists the 30-day SAR 460 tier at 5GB per day. Its business Global Premium page offers 10GB for a week (SAR 230), 20GB for two weeks (SAR 345) and 40GB for a month (SAR 460), where the consumer page lists 10GB, 25GB and a fair-use unlimited tier. If you travel on a company line, price that line's table against the eSIM figures before assuming the consumer prices above apply.

Dual-SIM workflow for stc customers in Europe

This setup keeps your Saudi number live for calls, bank OTPs, Absher and Nafath while your data runs at eSIM prices.

Step 1. Buy the Europe eSIM 3-7 days before you fly

Match the plan to your usage. Light users on maps, messaging and the occasional photo upload need 3-5GB per week. Heavy users running video calls or a laptop hotspot want closer to 1-2GB per day. Your QR code arrives by email and on the website.

Step 2. Install the eSIM at home

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan QR code. On Android: Settings → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan QR. Label the line "Travel" so it is unmistakable next to your stc line. Apple's own guide to travelling with a dual-SIM iPhone covers the same screens if you want a second reference.

Step 3. Turn off data roaming on the stc line, before you board

Settings → Cellular → tap the stc line → Data Roaming OFF. Voice and SMS keep working normally, so inbound authentication codes still arrive. With data roaming off, no roaming package can start spending itself on background syncs.

Step 4. Configure default lines

• Cellular Data: Travel (the new eSIM)
• Default Voice Line: stc
• iMessage / FaceTime: stc
• Allow Cellular Data Switching: OFF. This one is not optional. It stops iOS quietly failing data back over to the stc line when the eSIM signal dips in the Paris Métro or inside the Prado.

Step 5. Activate on arrival

Turn on cellular data for the Travel line when you land. The eSIM attaches to a European partner in 30-60 seconds. Your Saudi number keeps ringing, and stc bills nothing for data.

What this comparison leaves out

The maths above isolates one variable: the cost of data. Three things sit outside it, and any of them could matter more than price on a given trip.

Voice quality is the first. Both options route through European partner carriers, and quality depends on handset, codec and which partner you are handed to. We have no representative dataset.

Hotspot and tethering throughput is the second, and the harder one. stc's roaming packages inherit whatever the local partner allows. eSIM hotspot speed depends on the same partner networks, which sometimes treat roaming traffic differently from their own subscribers. Congestion is the third: roaming agreements can deprioritise traffic during local peak load, and neither side guarantees performance inside a stadium or on a New Year's Eve rooftop.

We also did not model stc's per-country pay-as-you-go rates. The site shows those only through its country selector, not as a published Europe rate. Nor did we model Mobily's or Zain KSA's bundles. If you are on either of those carriers, price your own bundle against the eSIM figures above rather than assuming stc's numbers transfer.

The buy

stc's roaming products are honest, opt-in and predictable, and that is worth something. Where they fall short is Europe pricing. A single worldwide tariff has to average the cheapest roaming market in the world in with the most expensive ones. A Saudi traveller flying to Paris pays for that averaging: SAR 287.50 for a fortnight, against $14.95 for the same fortnight across 33 countries on a Lotsotravel Europe eSIM.

If your itinerary crosses regions in one trip, Europe then Asia, stc's one-tariff simplicity is a real argument. If you are flying to Europe and staying there, install the eSIM and turn data roaming off on the stc line before you board. Your Saudi number stays alive for OTPs, and the five minutes of setup pays for itself before you clear passport control.
