The best eSIM for Turkey on most trips is our country plan on Türk Telekom: 10GB for 15 days costs $5.95. Buy and install it at home, because many eSIM sellers' websites and apps have been blocked inside the country since July 2025. Then you land with data. In Istanbul, five new museums opened inside Topkapı Palace on 24 October 2026, holding more than 10,000 artefacts.
Two groups can skip this guide. If your phone is carrier-locked or has no eSIM support, nothing here will install, so run through our eSIM compatibility guide first. And if you need a Turkish phone number for calls, a local card bought on arrival does that job, with the registration rules explained below.
Key takeaways
- Turkey only: 10GB for 15 days costs $5.95.
- If you add Greece, take the Europe plan.
- Before you fly, install it. Many eSIM shops are blocked locally.
- A holiday on a travel eSIM needs no phone registration.
- Every provincial capital has had 5G since April 2026.
What's new in Turkey for 2026 and 2027?
Istanbul's Topkapı Palace opened five new museums on 24 October 2026, and 2027 brings the city's 19th Biennial plus new direct flights from Germany. The national airline is also launching a new business class cabin.
The palace museums opened on 24 October, in the old imperial mint inside the palace's first courtyard. The national palaces authority spent seven years restoring its 17 buildings. Each of the five museums has its own theme:
- Porcelain: about 5,300 pieces.
- Weapons: about 2,500 pieces from the imperial armoury.
- Calligraphy: about 2,000 works.
- The mint and its industrial tools: about 500 objects on display.
- Maps: six galleries of historical maps.
The country is planning for more visitors. The government's medium-term programme targets $70 billion in tourism revenue for 2027, according to a report on 21 October. That follows a record $65.2 billion in 2025. The draft budget for next year lifts tourism spending to $244.5 million, from $188.4 million. The country already ranks fourth in the world for arrivals and expects to stay there through 2029.
Getting there is improving too. Turkish Airlines expects to fly its new Crystal business class suite in November on its newest long-haul jet, with a sliding door and a 22-inch screen. The same report says the airline plans nonstop flights from Istanbul to Sydney from the end of 2027, with Melbourne following in 2028.
| Date | What happens | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 24 October 2026 | Five Darphane-i Amire museums open in Topkapı Palace | Istanbul |
| October to November 2026 | Presidential International Yacht Race | Istanbul |
| 9 to 20 November 2026 | COP31 climate conference, so expect full hotels | Antalya |
| November 2026 | Crystal business class debuts on a Turkish Airlines A350 | From Istanbul |
| December 2026 | Şeb-i Arus whirling dervish festival, held every December | Konya |
| 23 April 2027 | SunExpress starts daily Weeze (Düsseldorf area) to Antalya | Antalya |
| 1 July 2027 | Corendon starts Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn to Istanbul, twice weekly each | Istanbul |
| 18 September to 14 November 2027 | 19th Istanbul Biennial | Istanbul |
| End of 2027 | Planned nonstop Istanbul to Sydney | Istanbul |
If you are planning Antalya in mid-November, book rooms early or shift the dates. The conference runs for 12 days.
On safety, the UK government's travel advice advises against all travel to one area only: within 10km of the border with Syria. Every place in this guide is a long way from that strip.
Which Turkey eSIM plan should you buy?
Buy the country plan if Turkey is your only stop, and the Europe plan if the same trip crosses into Greece or another nearby country. The country plan gives you far more data per dollar.
| Plan (fixed data) | Covers | 5 days | 10 days | 15 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey 5GB | Turkey | none | $4.95 | $4.95 | $4.95 |
| Turkey 10GB | Turkey | $4.95 | $5.95 | $5.95 | $5.95 |
| Turkey 20GB | Turkey | $7.95 | $8.95 | $8.95 | $9.95 |
| Turkey 30GB | Turkey | $9.95 | $11.95 | $11.95 | $12.95 |
| Europe 10GB | 33 countries | $7.95 | $8.95 | $8.95 | $8.95 |
| Europe 20GB | 33 countries | $12.95 | $13.95 | $14.95 | $15.95 |
Prices are what you pay through the links on this blog, read from our live product feed on 22 October 2026.
For most trips 10GB is plenty, and here is how to size it by trip length:
- A long weekend, up to 5 days: 10GB for $4.95.
- One to two weeks: 10GB for 15 days, $5.95. It costs the same as the 10-day plan, so the extra days are free.
- Maps, ride apps and nightly photo uploads, or a laptop on hotspot: 20GB for 15 days, $8.95.
- A month on the coast: 10GB for 30 days still costs $5.95, or take 20GB for $9.95 if you work online.
Buy one size up if you are unsure. Topping up from inside the country may not work, for the reason in the next section, so the plan you install at home should carry you to the end.
Every country plan listed Türk Telekom as its network when we checked on 22 October. Your phone will show that name once the eSIM connects. The plans are data only, with no local number, so leave your home line on your physical card for bank codes.
The regional plan covers 33 countries, Greece among them, on one install. Fifteen days split between two of them on 10GB costs $8.95. The data is one shared pool, so a heavy week in one city leaves less for the next. Our Europe eSIM travel guide lists every country it covers, and our 2027 Europe trip planner covers the dates worth building a route around.
Is there a Turkey eSIM ban?
No law bans eSIMs in the country, and an eSIM installed before you land keeps working. What changed in July 2025: the national telecom regulator blocked the websites and apps of many international eSIM sellers on local networks.
A tech news report on 24 July 2025 covered the block and named several of the largest travel eSIM brands. A report from 18 August 2026 says the restrictions still apply. It traces them to a decision by the regulator on 10 July 2025. We found no official statement from the regulator on the scope.
Here is what that means for you:
- Buy and install at home. Do the whole setup on your home internet, before the flight.
- Save the install code somewhere offline. A screenshot in your photos is enough.
- Buy data for the whole trip. Assume no eSIM shop, ours included, will load on a Turkish network.
- Keep a fallback. Hotel internet or your home carrier's roaming will do for an emergency.
Lotsotravel is an independent travel eSIM provider. We sell on our website only, with no app needed. Your QR code arrives by email and on the website, so you can install it at home before the trip.
Do you need to register your phone in Turkey?
Not if you use a foreign travel eSIM on a normal holiday. The registration rule targets phones running on local SIM cards, plus phones on a foreign line that stay on the network for most of a four-month window.
The rule sits in a regulation on registering each phone's serial number, which every handset carries. Its consolidated text, last amended on 2 July 2026, says it covers three groups:
- Phones served by local operators through their own subscriber identities, meaning a local card.
- Devices on what it calls permanent international roaming.
- The emergency-call units built into cars.
The regulation defines permanent roaming as a line from abroad that stays on the network for a long time. Such a line has an identity code that does not start with the local prefix 286. The test is more than 90 days in total within 120 days in a row. A holiday of two or three weeks on a foreign eSIM comes nowhere near that.
Buying a local card changes the picture. A press release from the regulator says a phone brought from abroad must be registered within 120 days of entry, through the government's e-Devlet portal. Operators send a text reminder every 30 days, and a phone left unregistered is cut off. Each person can register one phone from abroad every two calendar years, and a registration fee applies.
So a local card suits long stays and anyone who needs a local number. For a holiday, a travel eSIM skips the paperwork.
Does Turkey have 5G?
Yes. All three mobile operators switched on commercial 5G on 1 April 2026. Service started in all 81 provincial centres, and the operators must reach the whole country by April 2028.
So the provincial capitals have 5G now, while rural areas and smaller towns follow over the next two years. Whether you see 5G also depends on your phone model and on the plan's network access. We ran no speed tests there, so we make no 5G claim for our plans.
Do you need a visa for Turkey?
Most visitors from Canada and the UK do not. The foreign ministry's visa page lists ordinary passport holders from the United States, Canada, Ireland and Australia as visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
UK ordinary passport holders get the same 90 days for tourism, though some other types of UK passport need a visa. Other nationalities should check the ministry's list before booking.
Where the Turkey plan falls short
The country plan gives you mobile data on one network and nothing else. Check these limits before you buy.
- No local phone number. Services that send codes only to a local number will not reach you on this line.
- One network. Every country plan runs on Türk Telekom, with no second network to fall back on.
- No speed tests. We have not measured speeds on the ground, so we make no claim about how the network compares on your route.
Setting it up before you fly
Buy the plan a few days early and install it at home. Leave the eSIM line switched off until the plane lands at Istanbul or Antalya, then turn it on.
If the phone connects but no data flows, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only. Our troubleshooting guide covers the other fixes. Heading on to Cairo afterwards? Our guide to the best eSIM there covers the plans and the 2027 dates there.

Methodology
How we did this comparison
Lotsotravel prices come from our live v3 product API (/api/v3/products?country=TR and ?region=europe), read on 22 October 2026. We quote the VIP price, which is what you pay when you arrive through a link on this blog, and fixed-data plans only. We left out the Turkey plans sold as "Unlimited", because their allowance works differently. The network claim covers our Turkey country plans only (countryCount 1 in the API): every one of them listed Türk Telekom on that date. Our supplier's catalogue can change, which is what the carrierVerified date tracks.
The phone-registration section paraphrases the consolidated text of Turkey's device-registration regulation (last amended 2 July 2026) and a BTK press release on phones brought from abroad. It is a plain-English summary for a holiday trip, not legal advice. The eSIM-shop block has no official BTK statement that we could find, so that section relies on press coverage from July 2025 and August 2026.
Event and route dates come from the organisers or from the dated news reports linked beside each one. Entry rules come from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Safety guidance comes from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
What this post does not measure: we ran no speed tests in Turkey, we did not test 5G on our plans, and we do not compare customer support. The plans are data only, with no Turkish phone number.
