Can India Still Qualify for the WTC Final 2027? The PCT Maths

Updated Oct 22, 2026Pricing verified Oct 22, 202612 sources cited

Yes, India can still qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2027, with very little room for error. On 22 October 2026, South Africa beat Australia by an innings and 31 runs at Gqeberha. India stay fifth on 51.52% with seven matches left. Win all seven and they finish on 70.37%. One defeat anywhere caps them at 64.81%.

    Key takeaways

    • India sit fifth on 51.52%, with no points deducted.
    • Two away matches in New Zealand come first, then five at home to Australia.
    • Seven wins gives 70.37%. Six wins and a draw gives 66.67%.
    • Only a clean sweep beats the last runner-up's 67.54%.
    • England can reach 53.17% at most. Recent runners-up all finished higher.

    What changed at Gqeberha?

South Africa levelled the three-Test series 1-1, and Australia's points percentage fell to 75.00%. The hosts won by an innings and 31 runs, after losing the first Test in Durban. The decider is in Cape Town from 27 October, per the cycle schedule.

For India, the result helps a little. Australia still lead, but every loss they take lowers the bar for a top-two spot.

How is the WTC points percentage worked out?

Tables rank teams by points percentage: points earned divided by points available. The International Cricket Council (ICC) sets the rules for each cycle.

The ICC playing conditions for this cycle set the scale in clause 16.10. A win is worth 12 points and a draw 4. A tie earns 6, and a loss earns nothing.

Clause 16.11 adds the penalty. A team loses one point for every over it falls short of the minimum over rate. England lost two at Lord's in July 2025. Deductions are why England sit on 74 points rather than 88.

Clause 16.12 gives the formula. Take the points earned and subtract any deductions. Then divide by 12 for every match played. That is how India's 68 points become 51.52%. If two teams finish level, the competition regulations split them on series wins, then away percentage, then the ICC Test team rankings.

What does India need to reach the WTC final?

India need five wins, or four wins and three draws, to reach 59%, and all seven wins to pass 70%. India will have played 18 matches by the end, so the maximum is 216 points. Compared with a win, a draw drops India's ceiling by 3.70 percentage points and a loss by 5.56.

    India's wins0 draws1 draw2 draws3 draws
    770.37–––
    664.8166.67––
    559.2661.1162.96–

    348.1550.0051.8553.70
    242.5944.4446.3048.15

The rest of each row is losses. Read across: four wins, three draws and no defeats gives 59.26%, the same as five wins and two defeats. Rows with fewer than two wins top out at 48.15%, so we left them out.

India play both New Zealand matches as the away side. Under the regulations, away percentage is the second tie-break, so a win in Wellington or Christchurch carries a little extra weight in a dead heat.

What percentage has been enough in past WTC cycles?

Second place has needed between 58.8% and 67.54% in the last two cycles. In 2023-25, Australia were runners-up on 67.54%, behind South Africa. In 2021-23, India were runners-up on 58.8%, behind Australia.

Treat those figures as context, not a target. This cycle's line depends on how Australia, New Zealand and South Africa finish. If the leaders keep beating each other, second place could fall below 60%. If they keep winning, it could rise above 70%.

On the 2023-25 figure, India need all seven wins. On the 2021-23 figure, five wins and two defeats would do.

How does the Australia series change the maths?

Each of the five home matches against Australia moves two teams at once: an Indian win adds 12 points to India and takes 12 off Australia's maximum. Australia have 10 matches left, and five of them are in India. Their ceiling today is 86.36%. A 5-0 home win for India would cut it to 63.64%.

A 7-0 run would put India on 70.37% and leave Australia relying on results elsewhere. Treat that as a scenario, not a forecast. Australia have won nine of their 12 matches this cycle, per the cycle record.

Who else is in contention for the WTC final?

The top six on the table are below. The maximum assumes a team wins every match it has left, with no further deductions.

Can England still qualify for the WTC final?

Only on paper: England's best possible finish is 53.17%. England have 74 points from 16 matches after 14 points of deductions. They have three matches in South Africa and two in Bangladesh left. Five wins would give 134 points from 252, or 53.17%. That needs almost every other contender to collapse, and we have not modelled whether such a run of results is possible.

    Which Test could decide it?

Each row shows how many points India could still earn after that match. Each defeat takes 5.56 percentage points off India's ceiling. Watch for the first one.

    Frequently asked questions

Can India still qualify for the WTC final 2027?+
Yes. After South Africa beat Australia at Gqeberha on 22 October 2026, India are fifth on 51.52% with 68 points from 11 Tests. Seven Tests remain: two in New Zealand and five at home to Australia. Winning all seven lifts India to 70.37%, which would have topped the 2023-25 table. Six wins and a draw gives 66.67%. Every other result depends on what Australia, New Zealand and South Africa do.
How many matches does India need to win to reach the WTC final?+
No fixed number exists, because the top two are decided by percentage, not by wins. As context, the 2023-25 runner-up finished on 67.54%, and India can only beat that by winning all seven Tests. The 2021-23 runner-up finished on 58.8%, which five wins and two losses would clear at 59.26%. Neither figure is a guarantee for this cycle.
How is the WTC points percentage calculated?+
Under the ICC's 2025-27 playing conditions, a win earns 12 points, a tie 6, a draw 4 and a loss nothing. Over-rate deductions come off the total, one point per over short. The total is then divided by 12 times the number of Tests played. India have 68 points from 11 Tests, so 68 divided by 132 gives 51.52%.
Can England still qualify for the WTC final?+
Only in theory, and only with help. England are sixth on 38.54% after 16 Tests, with 14 points already deducted. They have five Tests left: three in South Africa and two in Bangladesh. Five wins would take them to 134 points from 252, or 53.17%. That is below the runner-up figure in each of the last two cycles, 58.8% and 67.54%.
When is India's next WTC Test?+
The first Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, from 19 to 23 November 2026. The second follows at Hagley Oval in Christchurch from 27 November to 1 December. India then host Australia in five Tests, starting in Nagpur on 21 January 2027 and ending in Ahmedabad on 3 March 2027.
Where and when is the WTC final 2027?+
At The Oval in London, from Wednesday 9 June to Sunday 13 June 2027, according to the ICC. It is the fourth World Test Championship final, played in the year cricket marks 150 years of Test cricket. The two teams in first and second place on the points table at the end of the league stage qualify.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

This post calculates World Test Championship points percentages (PCT) only. The base is the 2025-27 points table after South Africa's win over Australia in the second Test at Gqeberha, which ended on 22 October 2026. The ICC's own standings page did not load a table for us, so we took the table from Cricket Addictor and checked every team's PCT against Crex and the Wikipedia cycle page. All three matched. India's seven remaining Tests come from the BCCI home-season fixture list and New Zealand Cricket's summer schedule, as published by the ICC.

Scoring follows the ICC's 2025-27 playing conditions and competition regulations: 12 points for a win, 6 for a tie, 4 for a draw and none for a loss. PCT is points earned, minus over-rate deductions, divided by 12 times the Tests played. A team loses one point per over it falls short of the minimum over rate. Every scenario was computed by script and rounded to two decimal places.

We do not predict results, pitches, weather, injuries or selection, and we do not use betting odds. We assume India incur no over-rate deductions and play no ties. Past qualifying figures are context only, not a cut-off: the line moves every cycle with other teams' results. We update this post after each India Test.
