The True Cost of Vodafone Australia's $5 Roaming in Europe (2026) vs. Lotsotravel eSIM

Fourteen days in Europe on Vodafone Australia's $5 Roaming bills A$70. The same fortnight on a Lotsotravel Europe+ eSIM runs about $17 USD, roughly A$24.

That is a narrower gap than any carrier day pass we have priced. Telstra charges twice as much per day, Rogers in Canada charges more than three times as much, and most of the posts in this series end with an 80-95% saving. This one does not. Vodafone's $5 a day is a genuinely good headline rate, and the honest answer is that an eSIM beats it by about two to three times rather than ten.

The reason to read past the headline is that $5 a day is not the whole price. It spends your Australian data allowance rather than giving you a new one. It cannot touch the speed-capped portion of that allowance at all. It stops working after 90 days in a calendar year. And on the destination table Vodafone published on 23 August 2026, three of the 35 countries on our Europe+ plan were not eligible for it, which means data there is billed at $1 per megabyte.

The two price tags, side by side

Where the $5 actually goes

$5 Roaming is not a plan you buy, it is a switch that extends the plan you already have. Understanding what flips that switch is most of the cost story.

1. Three separate actions trigger the day's charge: using any data, making or receiving a call, and sending a text. Receiving an SMS does not. That asymmetry is useful, and we come back to it below.
2. You are spending your Australian allowance, not a travel allowance. Ten gigabytes used in Rome is ten gigabytes gone from the bucket that still has to cover the rest of your billing month at home.
3. Speed-capped data is carved out. Vodafone's terms exclude data delivered at capped speeds of 1.5, 2, 10 or 25 Mbps from $5 Roaming. If your plan's structure is a full-speed allowance followed by capped data, only the full-speed part travels with you.
4. Running out is not the end of the charging. Once included data is exhausted, Vodafone adds 1GB for $5 and repeats as needed. Additional Roaming Data expires at the end of your next billing period.

On an Ultra+ plan the picture changes: Vodafone gives you unlimited mobile data on the phone itself while roaming, with hotspot use over 30GB charged at $5/GB. If that is your plan, $5 a day for unlimited data is a real product and we say so in the "when Vodafone wins" section below.

The three European countries $5 Roaming does not cover

This is the finding most summaries of $5 Roaming miss, and it is the one that can cost you more than the entire trip's roaming budget.

We parsed Vodafone's published destination table on 23 August 2026 and checked all 35 countries on the Lotsotravel Europe+ plan against it. Thirty-two were flagged for $5 Roaming, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. Three were not:

Vodafone notes that eligible destinations change from time to time. Check the current table before you fly rather than trusting any published list, this one included.

What five real trips cost on each side

These are five European itineraries we see often in Lotsotravel order data from Australian customers. All Lotsotravel pricing uses the Europe+ regional plan, read from our live API on 23 August 2026. AUD figures convert at 1 AUD = 0.716 USD.

The saving runs roughly 50% on a five-day trip and about 68% on a three-week one, because the eSIM cost flattens out with plan size while the day pass keeps ticking. Those percentages are the floor, not the ceiling, for two reasons the table cannot show. The 10GB in the two-week row comes out of your Australian allowance on the Vodafone side and out of a dedicated bucket on the eSIM side. And if your plan does not include 10GB of full-speed data to begin with, the Vodafone column grows by $5 for every extra gigabyte.

Keeping your Australian number without paying for it

Because the $5 charge fires on data, calls made or received, and texts sent, but not on texts received, there is a clean configuration that keeps the useful half of your Vodafone line for nothing:

• Leave the Vodafone line switched on. Inbound SMS is free at Pay As You Go rates, so bank one-time codes, myGov messages and two-factor prompts keep arriving.
• Data Roaming off on that line. No data path, so no accidental trigger.
• Do not answer calls on it. Answering a call is a trigger, and if $5 Roaming is switched off it is $1 per 60 seconds instead. Let calls go to voicemail and return them over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Teams on the eSIM's data.

That combination costs A$0 and leaves you reachable for everything that actually matters while abroad.

Prepaid is a different product with different rules

If you are on Vodafone Prepaid, $5 Roaming is not what you get. Vodafone sells Prepaid Roaming Add-ons instead, available if your last recharge was Prepaid Plus or Pay and Go:

These are better value per gigabyte than the postpaid mechanic, and the destination list is different again: it runs to about 80 destinations and, unlike the postpaid $5 Roaming table, it does include Finland and Cyprus. The same 90-day annual limit applies, and unused add-on data does not go to your Data Bank.

Even so, A$35 for 7GB over 7 days sits against $11.99 USD (about A$17) for 5GB over 30 days on Europe+, or $16.99 USD (about A$24) for 10GB. The prepaid add-on wins on bundled voice minutes; the eSIM wins on data cost and on validity that outlasts your trip.

How this compares to Telstra and Optus

Australia's three carriers have converged on the day-pass model and diverged on what a day buys:

• Telstra International Day Pass is $10 AUD per calendar day in Zone 2, which covers most of Europe, with a daily data ceiling and no per-cycle cap. We ran the same five itineraries against it in the Telstra breakdown.
• Optus Daily Roaming is $5 AUD per rolling 24 hours and includes its own 5GB, which auto-renews at another $5 when you exhaust it. That 5GB is separate from your home allowance, which is a meaningful structural advantage over Vodafone's approach. The Optus breakdown has the details.
• Vodafone $5 Roaming matches Optus on headline price but hands you your own plan's data rather than a travel allowance, and carves out speed-capped data.

If you are choosing a carrier partly on roaming, that structural difference matters more than the identical $5 on the label.

When Vodafone $5 Roaming is the better choice

Three cases where we would not tell you to buy an eSIM.

• You are on an Ultra+ plan and taking a short, data-heavy trip. Unlimited phone data for $5 a day is a strong product. Five days in Barcelona streaming and hotspotting is A$25, and matching that on an eSIM means a higher unlimited tier.
• You want connectivity in the air. In-Flight Roaming runs at the same $5 a day on participating airlines. No travel eSIM connects at cruising altitude, so this is a genuine capability gap, not a price difference. In-flight days do count toward your 90.
• A one or two-day stopover, or no eSIM-capable phone. At A$5-10 total the money stops being the deciding factor. And handsets before roughly 2018, plus most basic Android and flip devices, cannot take an eSIM at all.

For everything else, a week or more, multiple countries, a family splitting data across phones, a trip that touches Finland or Cyprus, or more than 90 roaming days a year, the eSIM is the cheaper and more predictable buy.

Dual-SIM setup for Vodafone customers in Europe

Step 1. Buy the Europe+ eSIM 3-7 days before you fly

Match the plan to your usage. Maps, messaging and occasional uploads run 3-5GB a week. Video calls, laptop hotspot and heavy social use run closer to 1-2GB a day. Lotsotravel emails a notification when your QR code is ready, then you access it through the website.

Step 2. Install the eSIM at home

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan the QR code. Android: Settings → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan. Label the line "Travel" so you can tell it apart from Vodafone at a glance. Apple's dual-SIM guide covers the iPhone side in detail.

Step 3. Configure default lines

• Cellular Data: Travel (the new eSIM)
• Default Voice Line: Vodafone
• iMessage / FaceTime: Vodafone
• Allow Cellular Data Switching: OFF. This is the setting that prevents accidental $5 days.

Step 4. Disable data roaming on the Vodafone line

Settings → Cellular → tap the Vodafone line → Data Roaming OFF. Inbound SMS still arrives free.

Step 5. Activate on arrival

What this comparison leaves out

The arithmetic above isolates one variable: the cost of data. Three things sit outside it.

Voice call quality is the first. Both routes land on partner networks in Europe, and quality varies by device, codec and which partner you are handed to. We have no representative dataset, so we make no claim.

Network speed and hotspot performance is the second. $5 Roaming inherits your Vodafone plan's tethering rules; eSIM hotspot speed depends on the local partner, which occasionally treats roamers differently. Neither side guarantees throughput.

Congestion is the third and least predictable. Roaming traffic is sometimes deprioritised during local peak load, and an eSIM attaching as an ordinary local subscriber usually fares better, though neither option promises anything during a stadium event or a New Year's Eve countdown.

On the regulatory side, Australia's International Mobile Roaming Determination requires providers to send maximum-charge information when you start roaming, to offer a way to decline roaming entirely, and to make spend-management tools available. It does not cap what a carrier may charge. The $1/MB Pay As You Go rate is legal and disclosed; the protection is that you must be told, not that you must be spared.

The buy

Vodafone Australia's $5 Roaming is the best-priced carrier day pass in this series, and the arithmetic still points the other way. A two-week European trip is A$70 on Vodafone against about A$24 on a Lotsotravel Europe+ eSIM, and that A$70 also consumes ten gigabytes of the allowance you need back home.

The exclusions are where it gets sharper. If your itinerary touches Finland, Cyprus or the Faroe Islands, $5 Roaming does not apply there at all and data reverts to $1 per megabyte. If you travel more than 90 days a year, it stops. If your plan's data is speed-capped, some of it never leaves Australia with you.
