The World's Best Escape Rooms (TERPECA 2025): The Ranked Rooms by Country and City

Updated Oct 30, 2026221 sources cited

Every year TERPECA, an awards project run by escape-room enthusiasts, asks players who have done hundreds of rooms to rank the best they have played. The 2025 results put Magnifico at Escaparium in Laval, just north of Montreal, at #1, Magic Universe outside Madrid at #2 and Monster Mashers in Zoersel, Belgium, at #3. This page puts every room we could check on one map, grouped by country and by the city you would stay in.

The point is the trip. A world-ranked room is worth planning a weekend around, and several cities hold enough of them for a few days of play: Athens, the Barcelona area and Laval each have five or more. Every room on the list can be booked in English.

    Key takeaways

    • TERPECA's 2025 #1 is Magnifico at Escaparium in Laval, near Montreal; #2 is Magic Universe in Algete, near Madrid.
    • 100 rooms across 13 countries on one map, each with players, game length and booking from its own site.
    • Biggest clusters: Athens, the Barcelona area and Montreal/Laval.
    • Filter by TERPECA's horror rating to find rooms with no scares at all.

Ranks and horror ratings are TERPECA's 2025 results. Players, length and languages are from each room's own site, checked October 30, 2026.

    Where the clusters are

Spain has more rooms on this map than any other country, spread between the Barcelona area, Madrid, Valencia and a few one-off towns. Greece's rooms are all in and around Athens, and thirteen of the fifteen carry TERPECA's top horror rating. Canada's are almost all at Escaparium, which holds five ranked rooms at one Laval address and another at its Dorval branch.

Our take: if you want the most top-100 rooms for one flight, Laval is the easiest weekend, because five of them sit under one roof. Athens and Barcelona need more travel between venues but give you more choice.

    How to use the list

Pick a country, then a city. City guides have a card for every room with the player range, game length, languages and the room's own booking link, plus the award-winning restaurants nearby from our food series. Ranks marked NR are Top Rooms TERPECA lists without a rank of their own, usually an alternate version or one part of a combined game.

    How the ranking works

TERPECA asks experienced players, not owners or critics, to rank the rooms they have played. Nominators have played at least 200 rooms and voters at least 100, and nobody may vote for a room they are connected to. Every eligible room has to be bookable in English, which is why the list is useful to travellers: a room on it can be played without speaking the local language. The full method, and TERPECA's own caveat that regions with fewer enthusiast visitors are under-represented, is on its methodology page.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best escape room in the world?+
By TERPECA's 2025 ranking, Magnifico at Escaparium in Laval, Quebec, just north of Montreal. Magic Universe at Madland in Algete, near Madrid, is #2 and Monster Mashers (Dark Mode) at Tales of Torchdale in Zoersel, Belgium, is #3.
Which countries have the most top-ranked escape rooms?+
On this map, Spain has the most, followed by Greece, the United States and Belgium, then Canada, France, Germany and the Netherlands with eight each. Athens, the Barcelona area and Montreal/Laval are the biggest city clusters.
    What is TERPECA?+
The Top Escape Rooms Project Enthusiasts' Choice Awards, an annual ranking voted by experienced players. Nominators have played at least 200 rooms, voters at least 100, and only rooms playable in English are eligible.
Can I play these rooms in English?+
Yes. English play is a condition of entry to TERPECA. Some rooms in Spain, Belgium and Switzerland ask you to request English when you book; the room cards say where.
When do the 2026 results come out?+
TERPECA runs nominations in October, voting in November and announces results in December. We will add the 2026 rooms when they are published.
Is this a ranking of your own?+
No. The ranks and horror ratings are TERPECA's 2025 results. We add the practical details from each room's own site and put them on one map.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

Ranks and horror ratings are TERPECA's 2025 Top Room results. TERPECA (Top Escape Rooms Project Enthusiasts' Choice Award) is run by enthusiasts: in October, nominators who have played at least 200 rooms each put forward up to 10 rooms, and in November voters who have played at least 100 rank every finalist they have played, with owners and staff barred from voting for their own rooms. Only rooms playable in English are eligible. For 2025, 734 nominators made 6,630 nominations and TERPECA named 100 Top Rooms; a few more appear as Top Rooms without a rank of their own, usually an alternate version or one part of a combined game. TERPECA's horror levels run from no horror, through spooky (horror theming without scares) and passively scary (darkness or tension without many startles), to actively scary (jump scares or simulated attacks).

Players, game length, languages, addresses and booking links come from each room's own website, read on 30 October 2026, and every figure links to the page it came from. We do not rank rooms ourselves and nothing here is paid for. Planning notes marked "Our take" are ours. Map positions are geocoded from each room's published address. Rooms whose own website was offline or could not be checked are not listed. Rooms close and change format, so check the room's own site before you travel.
