A winter destination first, Vienna second, and official tickets only
Austria is the rare European country whose first quarter is its strong season: the Alps fill in January and February while the rest of the continent empties out. Vienna runs on a well-covered transport network and a set of imperial sights that sell tickets exclusively through their own channels, a detail worth knowing before you buy from a search result.
Austria is a top-three winter destination in the EU
In the first quarter of 2026, Austria took 30.1 million international tourist nights, third in the EU behind Spain and Italy, on the strength of the ski season.1
Vienna's Christkindlmarkt: 13 November to 26 December 2026
The Rathausplatz market opens daily 10:00–22:00, closing at 18:30 on Christmas Eve. The ice rink in the same square runs on into 6 January 2027.2
Our take: for the Alps, late January and early March give the best snow-to-crowd ratio; the school-holiday weeks in February are the ones to avoid. For Vienna, late April to June is warm, green and far cheaper than Advent.
Schönbrunn: buy from the palace, not a reseller
Schönbrunn states that genuine tickets are sold online only through the official Imperial Austria ticket shop. The palace opens daily 08:30–18:00; the gardens from 06:30 to 21:00.3
Choose your tour before you arrive
Options run from the shorter State Apartments route to the full Palace Ticket and a Classic Pass bundling the gardens, maze and Gloriette. Each is a separate ticket, priced from about €30 to €49 for adults.3
Our take: the gardens open two hours before the palace and cost nothing to walk. An early loop up to the Gloriette, then the first palace slot, is the best two hours in Vienna.
Vienna is a U-Bahn, tram and bus city
The city's tourist board describes a dense network of underground, tram and bus lines; a valid ticket is required before boarding, and the Vienna City Card bundles travel with discounts.4
Nationwide travel has a flat-rate option
The KlimaTicket covers public transport across Austria on a single annual pass, relevant if you are staying months rather than days.5
EES applies at Austrian external borders
Since 10 April 2026, non-EU travellers are registered with facial image and fingerprints instead of a passport stamp. Arriving from another Schengen country, you meet no border check at all.6

Counterfeit tickets are a real problem at the big sights
Schönbrunn warns visitors explicitly to buy only from official channels. The same caution applies to concert tickets sold by costumed sellers on Vienna's tourist streets.3
Austrian ski trips are the classic case for keeping data on your phone: lift status, avalanche bulletins, weather and the last gondola time all change during the day. Valley towns and the main lifts are well covered; the far side of a mountain, a forest road or a long rail tunnel is not. Download the resort's piste map and your lift pass QR before you go up, and save the local mountain-rescue number alongside 112.
Late January to early March gives the most reliable snow with fewer people, but avoid the European school-holiday weeks in February, when the resorts and their lift queues are at their fullest. Austria's first quarter is its peak season overall: 30.1 million international tourist nights in Q1 2026.1

No. Austria is inside the Schengen area, so an arrival from another Schengen country involves no border formality. The EU's Entry/Exit System applies when you first enter the Schengen area from outside it: the flight in from London or New York, not the train from Munich.6
