Can you visit China visa-free in 2027? Not confirmed yet. The 30-day visa-free entry is currently valid to 31 December 2026, and past extensions were announced in November. On 20 October 2026, the National Immigration Administration reported 8.99 million visa-free foreign entries for July to September. That was up 24.1% year on year, 77.5% of foreign entries.
A trip before the end of 2026 is covered for most of the 50 countries on the list. A trip in 2027 needs an extension first, and the 10-day transit route is the fallback.
Key takeaways
- The visa-free entry ends with 2026 for now.
- No extension has been announced yet.
- Harbin's ice park reopens at a record size.
- Our mainland eSIM plans start at $4.95.
Is China visa-free in 2027?
For most passports, nobody knows yet. The 30-day scheme runs to 31 December 2026, and the government has not said what happens after that. The last extension came in November, so the next decision may too.
Here is the timeline from official pages:
- On 3 November 2025, the foreign ministry extended the scheme to the end of 2026 and added Sweden, per a city government notice.
- In February 2026, Canadians joined, per their government's travel page.
- By September, the list had reached 50 countries, the state news agency reported.
- Today, the UK government says its citizens can enter without a visa until the end of 2026.
The 30 days cover tourism, business, family visits and transit. Paid work, study and journalism still need a visa.
Americans are in a different position. When the scheme was last extended, the US was not on the list, according to Reuters. Check with the embassy, or use the transit route below.
If your dates fall in early 2027, you have three moves:
- Hold refundable bookings until the decision is out.
- Go before 31 December 2026 if you want certainty now, and ask the embassy how a stay that runs into January is treated.
- Plan around transit if your passport qualifies and you can fly on to a third country.
We will update this post when an extension is announced.
How does China's 240-hour visa-free transit work?
The 240-hour transit lets you spend up to 10 days on the mainland without a visa, as long as you are on your way somewhere else. It covers 57 countries, including the US and the UK.
The immigration agency's policy page sets four conditions:
- You hold an ordinary passport from one of the listed countries.
- An onward ticket to a third country or region, with a confirmed seat and date, is required.
- Entry must be through one of 65 open ports, which include the two biggest cities.
- You stay inside the permitted areas.
The list grew to 57 on 20 August 2026, when the agency added two more countries. In practice, a ticket into Guangzhou and on to a third country can give you 10 days on the mainland with no visa form.
The two schemes side by side:
| 30-day visa-free entry | 240-hour visa-free transit | |
|---|---|---|
| Countries | 50 (as of September 2026) | 57 (from 20 August 2026) |
| Maximum stay | 30 days | 10 days |
| Onward ticket to a third country | Not required | Required, with confirmed seat |
| Where you can go | Anywhere open to visitors | The permitted areas only |
| Current end date | 31 December 2026 | None stated |
| Includes the US | No (as of November 2025) | Yes |

Why go to China in late 2026 and 2027?
The next nine months bring a record-sized ice park, a summit of world leaders, the lunar new year and a new nonstop flight from Vancouver. Visitors are spreading out, too. A report covered by the state news service found they now reach nearly 500 cities.
| Date | What | Where | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| to 4 Nov 2026 | 140th Canton Fair, its 70th anniversary year, with 220,000+ overseas buyers pre-registered | Guangzhou | Canton Fair release |
| Winter 2026–27 | Harbin Ice-Snow World at a record 1.25 million m², built from 400,000 m³ of ice and snow | Harbin | China Daily HK |
| 6 Feb 2027 | Lunar New Year's Day | Nationwide | Hong Kong SAR Government |
| from 4 May 2027 | Air Canada Vancouver to Guangzhou nonstop, Tue, Thu and Sun, subject to government approval | Guangzhou | Air Canada |
Harbin is the big winter draw. The park already bills itself as the world's largest ice-and-snow theme park. This season it grows to 1.25 million square metres, the state news agency reported. Curling and ice hockey events join the program. No opening date is out yet, so wait for it before you book flights.
Guangzhou gets a new link in 2027. The new nonstop leaves Vancouver just after midnight and lands at 05:00 the next day, three times a week.
The long view favours visitors too. The national tourism plan aims for 190 million inbound visits a year by 2030. The government also says it will make payments and tax refunds easier for visitors, per gov.cn.
Do Google and WhatsApp work in China with a travel eSIM?
On a Lotsotravel eSIM they generally do, with no VPN, because the data routes out through Singapore. A local phone plan or hotel internet does not route that way, which is why most guides insist on a VPN. Keep one as an optional backup, and sign in to it before you leave home.
Set up two things before the flight:
- Install the eSIM at home. Your phone will not install an international eSIM once you are inside the mainland. Our China eSIM activation guide walks through it. Our post on whether eSIMs are legal there explains the rule.
- Download Amap (Gaode). It is the maps app to use there, for walking, metro and driving.
You get the QR code by email and on the website. You need no app, since the whole purchase is website-only.
Which China eSIM plan fits your trip?
For a week, 10GB for 10 days at $6.95 covers maps, messages and photos. For the full 30-day stay, take 20GB for 30 days at $12.95.
| China plan (fixed data) | 5 days | 10 days | 15 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3GB | none | $4.95 | $4.95 | $4.95 |
| 5GB | $4.95 | $4.95 | $4.95 | $5.95 |
| 10GB | $5.95 | $6.95 | $6.95 | $7.95 |
| 20GB | $9.95 | $11.95 | $11.95 | $12.95 |
| 30GB | $13.95 | $15.95 | $16.95 | $17.95 |
Prices are what you pay through the links on this blog, read from our live product feed on 22 October 2026.
How to size it:
- A transit stop of up to 10 days: 10GB for 10 days, $6.95.
- Two weeks, say with a Harbin side trip: 10GB for 15 days, also $6.95. Take 20GB if you share data with a laptop.
- The full 30 days: 20GB for 30 days, $12.95.
Our 12-country Asia-Pacific plan does not include the mainland. It does include Hong Kong and Macau. So a stopover there plus a week in Guangzhou takes two eSIMs. For example, pair the regional 3GB plan for $4.95 with the mainland 10GB plan for $6.95. Install both at home and switch at the border.
If the mainland is one stop on a longer trip, our guide to the best regional eSIM covers the plan for the countries nearby.
What should you check before booking a 2027 trip?
Check your passport's scheme, your dates and your phone. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay at home too, and read each app's own help pages for card rules. We do not quote limits, because the published figures conflict.
The 30-day rule still ends on 31 December 2026 for most of the list, and a new announcement could change the country list as well as the dates.
The eSIM has limits too:
- It is data only. You get no local number, so keep your home line on for sign-in texts, with data roaming off.
- It uses one or two local networks. The plans run on China Mobile, China Unicom or both, and we ran no speed tests on them.
- It needs an unlocked phone. A carrier-locked phone, or one without eSIM support, cannot take any of these plans.
Lotsotravel is an independent travel eSIM provider, with mainland plans from $4.95 USD.

Methodology
How we did this comparison
Entry rules come from official pages read on 22 October 2026: the National Immigration Administration (NIA) policy and announcement pages, the Shanghai Municipal Government's report of the foreign ministry briefing on 3 November 2025, the UK Foreign Office's China entry page and the Government of Canada's China travel page. The quarterly figures come from the NIA's own release of 20 October 2026, with Xinhua's English report of the same briefing. Event and route dates come from the organisers: Air Canada, the Canton Fair's release on PR Newswire, and the Hong Kong SAR Government's 2027 holiday list.
Lotsotravel prices come from our live v3 product API (?country=CN and ?region=asia), read on 22 October 2026. We quote the VIP price, which is what you pay through a link on this blog, and fixed-data plans only. The carrier names cover our China country plans only (countryCount 1 in the API); each plan lists China Mobile, China Unicom or both.
What this post does not measure: we ran no speed tests in China, we did not test which individual apps load on every network, and we do not compare customer support. The plans are data only, with no Chinese phone number. We do not quote Alipay or WeChat Pay limits, because the published figures we found conflict.
