The True Cost of Jio International Roaming in Europe (2026) vs. Lotsotravel eSIM

Updated Oct 19, 2026Pricing verified Oct 19, 202612 sources cited

A fortnight in Europe on Jio's Europe roaming pack costs ₹2,899 (Indian rupees), about $30 USD, and buys you 5GB. The same fortnight on a Lotsotravel Europe eSIM is $8.95 for 10GB. You get twice the data for roughly a third of the price, and that gap is the whole argument.

Jio is India's largest mobile operator by subscribers, so its roaming tariff is the default for more outbound travellers than any other Indian carrier's. By the standards of this series, it isn't an expensive one either. There is no $18-a-day fee waiting on arrival, and no bill that doubles because your trip crossed a billing cycle. The catch is a data ceiling. Jio's Europe pack gives you 5GB for a month, and almost nothing in its public lineup is priced for a traveller who needs more.

Two terms come up throughout. Jio calls its roaming add-ons IR packs, short for international roaming. They are prepaid bundles of data, sometimes with minutes and SMS, that you recharge onto your Jio number before you fly. An eSIM is a SIM you download by scanning a QR code, so your phone can run it alongside your Jio SIM.

Below, we price five real European itineraries on each side. We also show why Jio's own pages disagree about what the ₹2,899 pack covers, and what pay-as-you-go data costs once a pack runs dry. The last section is the dual-SIM setup. It keeps your Indian number live for bank OTPs (one-time passcodes) and UPI codes (India's instant bank-payment system), while your data runs at eSIM prices.

Jio's Europe pack is ₹2,899 for 5GB over 30 days, about $6 per gigabyte. A Lotsotravel Europe 10GB plan works out closer to $0.90.

Both sides are prepaid and predictable, so the comparison comes down to price per gigabyte. On that measure, Jio's Europe pack costs close to seven times as much as the eSIM.

How Jio's roaming lineup is built

Jio restructured its international roaming packs in July 2026. It now sorts them into tiers by how many countries each one covers, keeping the existing price points. The 132-country tier holds the pack Jio's own business page labels a Europe Pack. The bigger data allowances sit in the 100-country tier. The 75-country tier covers the extremes, from a single day to heavy use, and a 6-country regional tier is aimed at single-destination trips rather than a European tour.

    132 countries₹1,4992GB14 days

    75 countries₹4,99915GB30 days
    6 countries (regional)₹1,555, ₹2,555, ₹3,455

Three things follow from that structure, and they set what your trip costs.

First, the pack Jio labels for Europe tops out at 5GB. Jio's business page ties ₹2,899 and 32 countries to Europe specifically. Every pack with more than 5GB in it sits in the 100-country or 75-country tier, and Jio does not publish either tier's country list on any page we could read. A traveller who needs 12GB in Italy is relying on a list they can only check in MyJio, Jio's app.

Second, validity starts at first use, not at purchase. Jio's own International Services page says plan validity "begins only with your first usage, call, text, or data". That is a real advantage over carriers whose clock starts at checkout, because recharging a week early costs you nothing. The flip side is that a background sync in the arrivals hall can start the clock before you intend to.

Third, roaming stays off until you ask for it. Indian regulation requires that, which is worth knowing before you worry about accidental charges.

Jio's own pages disagree about the ₹2,899 pack

We read four Jio sources on 2026-10-11 and again on 2026-10-19. All four return 200, meaning the page loads normally, and none of them fully agrees with the others.

    • The business International Roaming page lists a Europe Pack at ₹2,899, valid in 32 countries, with an additional in-flight benefit.
    • On the consumer IR pack FAQ, the same ₹2,899 price belongs to a World Pack applicable in 78 countries.
    • Jio's IR user guide PDF also calls it a World Pack, but says it is valid in 88 countries.
    • FoneArena's report on Jio's July restructure puts the same price in a 132-country tier.
    • The IR Data Only family, Jio's data-without-minutes packs, is 90 countries on the business page and 115 countries in the FAQ.

None of the four publishes the data allowance, the validity in days, or the list of countries behind any of those counts. The ₹2,899 price is the one thing every source agrees on, so we price from it. The 5GB-over-30-days allowance comes from trade press reporting rather than from Jio.

None of this makes the pack a bad buy. It does mean you can't verify what you are buying until you open the app, and you can't compare a pack whose contents are hidden until then. Check the pack name, the country list and the allowance in MyJio against your actual destination. Treat any figure you read anywhere else, including here, as needing that confirmation.

What five real trips cost on each side

We priced five European itineraries on the cheapest Jio pack in the published lineup that carries enough data. The other side is the Lotsotravel Europe regional plan, which covers 33 countries on one eSIM. Lotsotravel figures are live VIP prices, the price a reader arriving from this post pays, read on the verification date above.

TripJio, cheapest pack that fitsLotsotravel EuropeYou save
    5 days in Rome (~3GB)₹2,899, Europe Pack 5GB / 30d (~$30.10)$4.95 (3GB / 15d)~84%

    30-day Schengen summer (~20GB)₹3,999, 20GB / 30d (~$41.52)$15.95 (20GB / 30d)~62%

Two rows need a caveat, and the day pack needs a warning.

The caveat: the 10-day and 14-day rows use the ₹2,851 pack from the 100-country tier, because nothing in the Europe-labelled tier carries more than 5GB. Your destination may not be on that tier's unpublished list. If it isn't, your next Jio options are the ₹4,999 15GB pack in the 75-country tier (about $51.90), whose list is also unpublished, or two stacked ₹2,899 Europe packs at ₹5,798 (about $60.20). On those rows the saving then jumps from 70% to roughly 83-85%.

The warning is about the ₹589 day pack. For 1GB on a one-night stopover it looks cheap, and for exactly one night it is. Stack it across a week, though, and it becomes the most expensive route in Jio's catalogue. Seven days at ₹589 is ₹4,123, about $42.81, for 7GB. The same week on a Lotsotravel Europe 10GB plan is $8.95. For anything longer than a layover, buy a multi-day pack instead.

The data ceiling, and what sits above it

The biggest cost difference shows up for heavy users.

Jio's Europe-labelled pack tops out at 5GB for a month. For a traveller on maps, messaging and a few photo uploads a day, 5GB over two weeks is adequate. Video calls home, tethering a laptop in a café or uploading trip video will use it up in a week at best. Above it, Jio's largest published pack is ₹5,999 for 30GB over 30 days, about $62.29, in a tier whose country list is not published.

Our side of the same month: Europe 20GB for 30 days at $15.95, 30GB at $21.95, and 50GB at $34.95. There is also Europe 30GB Unlimited for 30 days at $18.95. It runs at full speed until the 30GB is spent, then throttles to 128 kbps instead of stopping. Set the ₹5,999 pack against the 30GB fixed plan and the eSIM is about 65% cheaper for the same allowance.

If a pack does run out mid-trip, pay-as-you-go is where roaming stops being cheap. That's the per-megabyte rate Jio charges when no pack is active. Jio's business page says roaming charges depend on the country, the partner network and the kind of usage, and names no per-megabyte figure. TelecomTalk's August 2026 guide notes that Jio's lower standard tariff works out to roughly ₹2 per MB in some destinations, with higher tariffs elsewhere. That is more than ₹2,000 for a single gigabyte, about $21 USD. Against $0.90 per gigabyte on a 10GB Europe plan, it's a factor of more than twenty. Running out of data abroad should be an inconvenience, not a tariff event.

If you are on Airtel rather than Jio, the arithmetic is close but not identical, and we priced it separately in the Airtel international roaming comparison.

What Jio's pack gives you that an eSIM does not

The price table only measures data, and Jio's pack carries two things it doesn't count.

The ₹2,899 pack bundles 200 voice minutes and 100 SMS. A Lotsotravel eSIM is data-only: calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or your Jio line, and there is no Indian number attached to the eSIM. If your trip involves calling Indian landlines, hotels or local numbers from your handset rather than over an app, that bundle has value this comparison does not price.

The ₹2,899 tier also carries an in-flight benefit. An eSIM can't match it, because eSIMs attach to ground networks. On a long-haul route where you would otherwise buy airline Wi-Fi, that is a real inclusion.

Neither changes the conclusion for a data-led trip. Both are reasons to read your pack's terms rather than assume the cheapest line in a table is the right buy.

Dual-SIM workflow for Jio customers in Europe

This setup keeps your Indian number live for OTPs, UPI and inbound calls while your data runs at eSIM prices.

Step 1. Buy the Europe eSIM 3-7 days before you fly

Match the plan to your usage. Light users on maps, messaging and the occasional upload need 3-5GB a week. Heavy users on video calls or a laptop hotspot want closer to 1-2GB a day. Lotsotravel emails a notification when your QR code is ready, then you access it through the website.

Step 2. Install the eSIM at home

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan QR code. On Android: Settings → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan QR. Label the line "Travel" so it is unmistakable next to your Jio line. Apple's dual-SIM guide covers the same screens if you want a second reference.

Step 3. Keep Jio's roaming on for SMS, and its data off

For OTPs and UPI codes to arrive, the Jio line needs international roaming activated. Under TRAI's rules that means requesting it, since it is off by default. Then turn the data path off: Settings → Cellular → tap the Jio line → Data Roaming OFF. Voice and SMS keep working, so authentication codes still land, and no pack or pay-as-you-go data can start spending itself.

    Step 4. Configure default lines

    • Cellular Data: Travel (the new eSIM)
    • Default Voice Line: Jio
    • iMessage / FaceTime: Jio
    • Allow Cellular Data Switching: OFF. This one is not optional. It stops iOS quietly failing data back over to Jio when the eSIM signal dips in the Paris Métro or inside the Vatican Museums.

    Step 5. Activate on arrival

Turn on cellular data for the Travel line when you land. The eSIM attaches to a European partner in 30-60 seconds. Your Indian number keeps ringing, and Jio bills nothing for data.

    Pros

    • 62-84% cheaper than Jio's cheapest fitting pack across the five itineraries priced above
    • Data tiers that match real trips, from 3GB to 50GB, instead of a 5GB ceiling on the Europe pack
    • Around $0.90 per gigabyte on the 10GB plan against roughly $6 on Jio's Europe pack
    • One Europe eSIM covers 33 countries, Türkiye included, with no change at border crossings
    • A separate data bucket, so a background sync cannot quietly open a 30-day validity window
    • Your Jio number stays reachable for inbound calls, bank OTPs and UPI confirmations
    • The allowance, validity and country list are published before you buy, not after you open an app

    Cons

    • Requires an eSIM-compatible phone (iPhone XS/2018 or newer, most flagship Android phones from 2020+)
    • Five minutes of one-time setup against recharging a pack in MyJio
    • Data-only: Jio's ₹2,899 pack bundles 200 voice minutes and 100 SMS that the eSIM does not replace
    • No in-flight benefit, which Jio includes on its ₹2,899 tier
    • A stop outside the 33-country Europe list, Serbia or Albania for instance, needs a separate plan while Jio's broader tiers may cover it
    • On a multi-region trip, Europe then Southeast Asia in one journey, Jio's single tariff is simpler than buying two regional eSIMs
    • If your handset fails abroad you cannot move the eSIM to a borrowed phone the way you can a physical SIM

    What this comparison leaves out

The arithmetic above isolates one variable: the cost of mobile data. Several things sit outside it, and any of them could matter more than price on a given trip.

Voice quality is the first. Both options route through European partner carriers, and quality depends on handset, codec and which partner you are handed to. We have no representative dataset, so we make no claim.

Hotspot and tethering throughput is the second, and the harder one. Jio's packs inherit whatever the local partner allows. eSIM hotspot speed depends on the same partner networks, which sometimes treat roaming traffic differently from their own subscribers. Congestion is the third: roaming agreements can deprioritise traffic at local peak load, and neither side guarantees performance inside a stadium or on a New Year's Eve rooftop.

We also did not price Jio's per-country pay-as-you-go rate card, which Jio shows by destination rather than as one published Europe rate. Nor did we price the Airtel and Vi packs, beyond the Airtel comparison linked above. Jio's allowances live in the MyJio app rather than on its website, so the per-pack data figures here rest on trade press reporting, labelled as such throughout. If what you read in the app differs from this post, go with the app, because that's what you are buying from.

    The buy

Jio's roaming is opt-in and predictable, its clock starts when you first use it, and it bundles minutes. Those are real virtues, and they are why this post does not read like the Rogers or AT&T comparisons in this series. Where Jio falls short is price, for a traveller who needs data in Europe. The pack it labels for Europe is 5GB for a month at about $6 a gigabyte. The bigger packs sit in tiers whose country lists Jio does not publish, and pay-as-you-go beyond the allowance runs north of $20 a gigabyte.

For a week in London, that is $30 against $5.95. For a month across Schengen, it's $41.52 against $15.95, with 20GB on both sides. Install the Europe eSIM and keep international roaming active on the Jio line so your OTPs still arrive. Turn its data roaming off before you board, and you'll pay between 62% and 84% less for the data you use.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does Jio international roaming cost in Europe in 2026?+
Jio's business International Roaming page lists a Europe Pack at ₹2,899 covering 32 countries, with an in-flight benefit. Trade press reporting on Jio's July 2026 restructure puts the same ₹2,899 price point in a 132-country tier carrying 5GB of data, 200 voice minutes and 100 SMS over 30 days. At ₹96.31 per USD that is about $30 USD for 5GB, or roughly $6 per gigabyte. A Lotsotravel Europe 5GB plan for 30 days is $6.95, so the eSIM is about 77% cheaper for the same allowance, without the bundled minutes.
Why do Jio's own pages disagree about the ₹2,899 pack?+
We read three Jio pages on 2026-10-11 and again on 2026-10-19, and they describe the same ₹2,899 pack differently. The business International Roaming page calls it a Europe Pack valid in 32 countries. The consumer IR pack FAQ calls it a World Pack applicable in 78 countries, and Jio's own IR user guide PDF calls it a World Pack valid in 88. The IR Data Only family is listed as 90 countries on one page and 115 on another. None of them publishes the data allowance. The price is consistent everywhere, so you can rely on it. Still, confirm the pack name, country list and data allowance in the MyJio app for your actual destination before you fly.
Does a Jio IR pack's validity start when I buy it or when I land?+
Jio's International Services page states that plan validity begins only with your first usage, whether that is a call, a text or data. That beats carriers whose packs start ticking at purchase, and it means you can recharge days before departure without losing validity. The trade-off is that the first byte your phone sends on a European network starts the clock, so a background sync in the airport arrivals hall can begin a 30-day window before you have consciously opened an app.
Does Jio roaming switch on automatically when I land in Europe?+
No. TRAI requires that international mobile roaming be inactive by default for all consumers and activated only on the request of a consumer, and that operators confirm activation by SMS, email and app notification along with the applicable tariff. Operators must also send alerts as spending crosses thresholds. The practical effect is that an Indian traveller does not face the arrival-day bill shock a Canadian or American one does. The opposite failure applies instead: land with nothing activated and your Jio line simply has no service abroad.
Will I still get bank OTPs and UPI codes on my Jio number while using a Lotsotravel eSIM?+
Yes, provided you have international roaming activated on the Jio line and leave it registered for voice and SMS while cellular data runs on the eSIM. This matters more for Indian travellers than for most: bank OTPs, UPI confirmations, IRCTC and DigiLocker messages are routed by SMS to your registered Indian number, and an eSIM has no Indian number to receive them on. You do not need a data pack for that. Jio bills calls and outgoing SMS abroad at its standard pay-as-you-go rates, which vary by country, so check your destination's rate card rather than assuming a flat figure.
What happens when the 5GB on the Jio Europe pack runs out?+
Jio's public pages do not state the post-cap behaviour for IR packs, which is one of several things left to the app. In practice you either buy a second pack or fall back to pay-as-you-go rates, and pay-as-you-go is where roaming gets expensive: TelecomTalk's August 2026 guide notes Jio's lower standard tariff works out to roughly ₹2 per MB in some destinations, which is over ₹2,000 for a single gigabyte, about $21 USD. For comparison, a Lotsotravel Europe 10GB plan is $8.95, around $0.90 per gigabyte.
Is the Lotsotravel Europe eSIM one plan across borders, and is Türkiye included?+
Yes to both. The Europe regional plan covers 33 countries on a single eSIM and Türkiye is on that list, so an Istanbul stopover on the way to Europe is covered by the same plan and the same data bucket. Crossing from France into Italy, or riding the Eurostar from London to Paris, needs no new QR code and no settings change: the eSIM attaches to a partner network in the new country automatically.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

Jio's pack structure was read directly off three of Jio's own pages on 2026-10-11 and re-read on 2026-10-19: the consumer International Services page, the business International Roaming page, and the IR pack FAQ under jio.com/help, cross-checked against Jio's own IR user guide PDF (myjiostatic.cdn.jio.com/jio/plan/ir-user-guide.pdf). All four return 200 and all four were read in full.

Jio does not publish a per-pack rate card with data, validity and country list on a crawlable page: its own pages name pack families and country counts, and the allowances live in the MyJio app. For the per-pack figures we therefore use FoneArena's 13 July 2026 report on Jio's IR restructure, which itemises the 132-, 100-, 75- and 6-country tiers, and TelecomTalk's 1 August 2026 roaming guide for pay-as-you-go context. Where Jio's own pages and the trade press disagree, the post flags the conflict instead of picking a number.

Lotsotravel pricing is the VIP price from our live v3 catalog, re-read on 2026-10-19, which is what a reader arriving from this post pays. All Europe scenarios use the Europe regional plan: 33 countries on a single eSIM, Türkiye included. INR/USD conversions use ₹96.31 per USD, the 2 October 2026 rate in the U.S. Federal Reserve's H.10 release of 5 October 2026. The rupee has since moved to about ₹95 per USD, which would make every Jio price here about 1% higher in dollars and does not change any conclusion.

This comparison measures the cost of mobile data and nothing else. Jio's IR packs bundle voice minutes and SMS that a data-only eSIM does not provide, and we do not price that bundle. We do not measure voice quality, hotspot throughput, network speed or customer support, for Jio or for ourselves.
