O2 Europe Zone 2026: Which Countries Are In It, Is It Free, and What Are the Limits?

Updated Oct 31, 2026Pricing verified Oct 30, 20268 sources cited

Yes, O2 roaming in Europe is still free in 2026 for Pay Monthly customers. Your UK minutes, texts and data work across O2's Europe Zone of 48 destinations at no extra charge, with data capped at 25GB a month while you're there, or at your UK allowance if that is smaller. The catches are a fair-use rule for stays longer than 63 days in four months, and a separate price list for anywhere outside the zone.

This guide covers what's in the zone, how the limits work, and what O2 charges once you leave it. Every figure comes from O2's own personal-customer pages, read on 30 October 2026.

Alpine peaks, a Mediterranean coast, the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum, four places inside O2's Europe Zone
O2's Europe Zone covers 48 destinations. Türkiye, Andorra and most of the Balkans sit outside it.

Does O2 have free roaming in Europe?

It does. O2's EU roaming page describes Europe Zone roaming as part of its tariffs rather than an add-on, and O2 calls itself the only major UK network that lets everyone roam in the EU at no extra cost. Nothing needs switching on: if data roaming is enabled on your phone, your UK allowance keeps working when you land.

Three details decide whether "free" holds for your trip:

    RuleWhat O2 publishes
Data limit25GB a month in the Europe Zone, or your UK allowance if it's under 25GB
Calls and textsYour UK allowance, as at home
Long staysFair use ends after 63 days roaming in any four-month period
    Going overBuy a Data Bolt On, from £5.50 (100MB) to £32.50 (12GB)
TabletsNot included; an O2 Pay Monthly tablet SIM only works in the UK

The tablet line catches people out. O2's FAQ says free EU roaming is only available on SIMs for your phone, so a separate O2 iPad or tablet SIM won't connect in Spain.

Is O2 still free roaming in Europe, or did it bring back charges?

It's still included. As of 30 October 2026, O2's EU roaming page and its fair-use terms both describe Europe Zone roaming as included in the tariff, with no daily fee.

Pay As You Go customers get it too. O2 says its PAYG SIMs include EU roaming for calls, texts and data, with a note to check your specific destination before you travel.

What countries are in the O2 Europe Zone?

    O2 lists 48 destinations:

    AustriaGuadeloupeMonaco
    AzoresGuernseyNetherlands
    BelgiumHungaryNorway
    BulgariaIcelandPoland
    Canary IslandsIrelandPortugal
    CroatiaIsle of ManRéunion
    Cyprus (not Northern Cyprus)ItalyRomania
    Czech RepublicJerseySaint Barthélemy
    DenmarkLatviaSaint Martin
    EstoniaLiechtensteinSan Marino
    FinlandLithuaniaSlovakia
    FranceLuxembourgSlovenia
    French GuianaMadeiraSpain
    GermanyMaltaSweden
    GibraltarMartiniqueSwitzerland
    GreeceMayotteVatican City

That is all 27 EU members, the EEA states (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein), Switzerland, the microstates of Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City, Gibraltar, the three Crown Dependencies, and a set of French, Spanish and Portuguese islands and overseas regions.

Which European countries are not in the O2 Europe Zone?

The ones UK travellers most often assume are covered:

    • Türkiye. Not in the Europe Zone. It is on the O2 Travel list, so a day of use costs £7 (more on that below).
    • Andorra. Not in the Europe Zone and not on the O2 Travel list either, so O2's standard roaming rates apply.
    • Northern Cyprus. O2 excludes it explicitly from the Cyprus entry.
    • Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Kosovo. Not in the Europe Zone and not on the O2 Travel list.
    • Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Ukraine. Not in the Europe Zone, but on the O2 Travel list at £7 a day.

A two-centre holiday in Croatia and Montenegro is the classic trap: the Croatian days are free, the Montenegrin ones are not.

Is the UK in the O2 Europe Zone?

The UK is O2's home network, so using your phone in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland is not roaming and the Europe Zone rules don't apply. The Crown Dependencies are another matter. Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are on O2's Europe Zone list, which means data you use there is Europe Zone roaming and counts toward the 25GB limit, and days spent there count toward the 63-day fair-use clock.

What is O2 Europe Zone data, and how does the 25GB limit work?

"Europe Zone data" is your normal UK data allowance, used abroad. O2 doesn't give you a separate travel bucket. The fair-use terms split customers into two groups:

    • UK allowance over 25GB (including unlimited plans): you can use up to 25GB of it in the Europe Zone each month. O2 texts you when you are getting close and again when you hit it.
    • UK allowance of 25GB or less: the 25GB limit doesn't apply to you, because your own allowance runs out first. On a 10GB plan, you have 10GB in Paris, shared with whatever you used at home that month.

In both cases, once the data is gone you need a Data Bolt On to keep going. O2's Bolt Ons page lists these one-off Data Bolt Ons, valid for over 30 days and usable in the UK and the Europe Zone:

    Data Bolt OnPricePer GB
    100MB£5.50£55.00
    500MB£8.50£17.00
    1GB£12.50£12.50
    2GB£15.50£7.75
    4GB£18.99£4.75
    8GB£24.99£3.12
    12GB£32.50£2.71

Bundle size matters. Topping up 4GB with four 1GB Bolt Ons costs £50; one 4GB Bolt On costs £18.99.

You can watch your usage in the My O2 app under My Allowances.

What are O2's fair-use limits for long stays?

O2's Europe Zone roaming is meant for holidays and short breaks, and the terms say so. The rule:

    1. 63 days in any four-month period. Roaming for longer than that counts as unfair use.
    2. A text first. O2 sends a fair-usage notification before anything changes.
    3. Surcharges after the text. Further roaming usage costs £3.50 per GB of data, 3.3p a minute for calls and 1p a text, on top of your plan, billed the following month.
    4. The surcharge lifts once most of your usage over the previous four months has been in the UK.

O2's own worked example: 1GB of data and 100 texts after the notification adds £4.50 to your bill.

The £3.50 figure circulates online as O2's price for going over 25GB. It isn't. It is the permanent-roaming surcharge, and it only applies after the 63-day notification. Going over 25GB on a normal trip means buying a Data Bolt On from the table above.

What does O2 charge for roaming outside the Europe Zone?

Outside Europe you are on one of three arrangements, depending on your plan.

O2 Travel Inclusive Zone (Volt and selected Plus plans). Unlimited minutes, texts and data in 27 destinations outside Europe at no extra cost, including the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Data has no cap on volume but is limited to 2Mbps. It is not available on 30-day SIM Only or Pay As You Go. Details on O2's page.

O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate (Ultimate plans only). The same deal across 75 destinations outside Europe, including Türkiye, the UAE, South Africa and Thailand. O2's Ultimate page has the list.

O2 Travel Bolt On (any Pay Monthly plan). £7 a day for unlimited minutes, texts and data in the same 75 destinations, data again capped at 2Mbps. You pay only for days you use it; a day runs 24 hours from your first call, text or data session, and receiving calls or texts doesn't trigger it. Add it in My O2 or text TRAVEL to 23336. O2 notes that the charge sits outside any Spend Cap. O2 Travel terms.

Anywhere else, or anywhere without one of these, O2 charges its standard roaming rates for calls and texts, and data needs a Data Roaming Bolt On (a fixed allowance valid for over 30 days). O2 doesn't publish those rates on a single page; its destination checker gives the price for each country.

Is O2's Europe Zone the same as the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone?

No, and the names cause confusion. The Europe Zone is the 48 European destinations included on every Pay Monthly tariff. The Travel Inclusive Zone is a separate benefit covering 27 destinations outside Europe, and only some plans have it. A plan can include the first without the second.

When a travel eSIM makes sense alongside O2

For a week in Spain on an unlimited O2 plan, you don't need anything else. A data eSIM earns its place in four situations, and in each one your O2 number keeps working for calls, texts and bank codes:

    • Your UK allowance is small. On a 5GB plan, a 12GB holiday means an 8GB Bolt On at £24.99. Lotsotravel's Europe eSIM with 15GB for 15 days is $12.95.
    • Türkiye is on the itinerary. O2 charges £7 a day there, so a week is £49. Our Europe plan includes Türkiye in the same 33 countries, and 10GB for 10 days is $8.95.
    • You'll pass 25GB. Remote work and laptop hotspotting eat data fast. On an unlimited O2 plan, a 50GB fortnight leaves 25GB to top up: two 12GB Bolt Ons and a 1GB one, £77.50. A 50GB / 15-day Europe eSIM is $32.95.
    • You're staying past 63 days. A data eSIM has no fair-use clock, so slow travellers can stack plans instead of waiting for O2's surcharge text.

Coverage also runs the other way. Our 33-country Europe plan doesn't include Gibraltar, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City or the French overseas regions, all of which are in O2's zone. If those are your destinations, O2 is the simpler choice.

    Frequently asked questions

Does O2 have free roaming in Europe in 2026?+
Yes. O2 includes roaming in its Europe Zone as part of its Pay Monthly tariffs, so your UK minutes, texts and data work in 48 European destinations at no extra cost. Data is capped at 25GB a month while roaming, or at your UK allowance if that is smaller. Past that point you buy a Data Bolt On.
What is the O2 Europe Zone?+
It is the list of 48 destinations where O2 lets you use your UK allowance as if you were at home. It covers every EU country plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Gibraltar, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and several French, Spanish and Portuguese islands and overseas regions. Türkiye, Andorra and the Balkan states outside the EU are not in it.
Is the UK in the O2 Europe Zone?+
The UK is O2's home network, so using your phone there is not roaming at all. The Crown Dependencies are a different case: Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are listed in O2's Europe Zone, so data you use there counts as Europe Zone roaming and toward the 25GB limit.
What happens if I go over 25GB in the O2 Europe Zone?+
O2 texts you as you get close to the limit and again when you reach it. To keep using data you add a Data Bolt On in My O2. They range from 100MB for £5.50 to 12GB for £32.50, and the same bundles work in the UK and the Europe Zone.
How long can I stay in Europe on O2 before charges apply?+
O2's fair-use terms treat more than 63 days of roaming in any four-month period as unfair use. O2 sends a text first. After that, usage is surcharged at £3.50 per GB of data, 3.3p a minute and 1p a text until most of your usage over the previous four months is back in the UK.
Does O2 Pay As You Go include EU roaming?+
Yes. O2 says its Pay As You Go SIMs include EU roaming, so your calls, texts and data work as they do at home, but it also says this depends on the country, so check your destination before you leave. Pay As You Go is not eligible for the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone outside Europe.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

Every O2 figure in this guide was read on 2026-10-30 from O2's own pages for personal (not business) customers: the EU roaming page, the Roaming Fair Usage terms, the Pay Monthly Bolt Ons page, the O2 Travel page and the two O2 Travel Inclusive Zone pages. Each is linked in the sources below. O2 Business roaming runs on different terms and is out of scope.

The 48-destination list is copied from O2's EU roaming page as published on that date. O2's "Using your phone abroad" page describes the same zone as "40+ destinations"; we use the itemised list. Where we say a country is not in the Europe Zone or not covered by O2 Travel, that is because it does not appear on O2's published list.

Lotsotravel prices are the VIP prices from our live catalog on 2026-10-30, which is what a reader who clicks through from this post pays.

We do not measure network speed, call quality or customer support for O2 or for Lotsotravel.
