The True Cost of Vodacom Roaming in Europe (2026) vs. Lotsotravel eSIM

Fourteen days through Italy and France costs R698 on Vodacom's cheapest sensible route to Europe, about $43 USD. It costs R7,680, about $476, if you land without a bundle and let your phone sync photos at standard roaming rates. The same fortnight on a Lotsotravel Europe+ eSIM is $10.

Vodacom is the more interesting carrier in this series precisely because its bundle pricing is decent. Where Rogers and AT&T charge a flat daily fee and leave you nothing to decide, Vodacom sells a R99 gigabyte that looks reasonable next to the alternatives. The cost sits somewhere else: in the seven-day expiry, in the bundle that silently re-buys itself when you run out, and in the eleven-fold cliff waiting for anyone who forgets to opt in.

The two price tags, side by side

What Vodacom actually charges in Europe

Vodacom has no Europe-specific roaming product. Europe sits in the same global footprint as everywhere else, and a traveller flying to Milan picks from the same shelf as one flying to Mauritius. The shelf is stocked through Vodafone Group, which is why Vodacom's terms fall back to "Vodafone world rates" for any destination outside the bundle footprint, and why Vodacom Group could report a combined 237.3 million customers in its year to 31 March 2026. Voice and SMS ride alongside. In every European destination we checked, standard rates are R2.55 a minute to make a local call, R5.05 to make an international call, R5.05 a minute to receive a call and R1.05 per SMS. On a travel bundle or All For You bundle, making and receiving calls both drop to R2.55 and SMS to R0.85.

Two things fall out of that table that Vodacom does not advertise.

The 5GB bundle is the cheapest data Vodacom sells to Europe, and the break-even is 3.53GB. Five R99 bundles cost R495 for the same 5GB that R349 buys directly. Anything above roughly 3.5GB in a seven-day window belongs on the 5GB bundle. Below it, the R99 bundle wins, which is why our shortest itinerary below runs on 1GB bundles rather than the bigger one.

All For You is worth it only if you actually make the calls. The R199 bundle costs R100 more than the R99 travel bundle and includes 100 minutes. Those same minutes bought at the bundle rate of R2.55 would cost R255, so if you use them all you are ahead. If your calling happens on WhatsApp, as it does for most travellers, you have paid R100 for nothing.

The number nobody quotes: R0.75 per megabyte

Vodacom's rate finder banner reads "Check out our low roaming rates from as low as R0.75/Mb." That is the standard roaming data rate, and it is the number that applies to any Vodacom line that connects to a European network without a bundle active.

Run it out. A megabyte is 75 cents. A gigabyte lands between R750 and R768 depending on whether you count it as 1,000 or 1,024 megabytes, roughly $47 USD per gigabyte. Ten gigabytes across a two-week trip is R7,680, about $476. Billing is metered in 10kB increments, so there is no rounding cushion to hide behind either.

You are not supposed to end up here, and most people do not. But the failure mode is ordinary rather than exotic. Vodacom's terms state that prepaid lines activated from 28 August 2019 onwards have international roaming switched on automatically, so a prepaid handset with airtime on it will attach to a European network and start billing the moment it comes out of flight mode, whether or not its owner has thought about roaming at all. Bundles, meanwhile, require an explicit opt-in via *135*130# or the VodaPay app.

What five real trips cost on each side

Five European itineraries, priced against Vodacom's cheapest available route on each one rather than its most expensive, with the 7-day bundle expiry applied in full: a 10-day trip needs two bundle cycles, a 21-day trip needs three. All Lotsotravel figures come from live Europe+ regional plan pricing on 1 September 2026.

The saving sits in a 72-77% band, and it widens with trip length rather than exploding the way it does against a daily-fee carrier. That is a credit to Vodacom's pricing. The 1GB and 5GB bundles have held at R99 and R349 since Vodacom launched them in November 2022 at exactly those prices, so the effective R69.80 per gigabyte has survived four years of rand pricing updates unchanged, including the annual repricing that took effect on 1 June 2025.

Now the same five trips for a traveller who never opted in to a bundle:

Same trips, same eSIM, and the saving jumps from 72-77% to 97-98% purely because of one opt-in the traveller did not make. The distance between Vodacom's two columns is larger than the entire cost of either alternative, which is the single most useful thing to know before you fly.

The bundle expiry is the part that actually costs you

Seven days is short for a European holiday. Vodacom's current terms are clear that the bundle "expires after 7 days" and that a new one allocates only when you next trigger roaming data, which means the price does not scale smoothly with trip length. It steps.

A 10-day trip is two cycles. A 16-day trip is three. A month in Europe is five, at R349 each if you are on the 5GB bundle: R1,745, about $108. The equivalent Lotsotravel Europe+ 20GB / 30-day plan is $15, and a 30-day Unlimited LITE plan, with a 2GB-per-day fair-use allowance before throttling to 1 Mbps, is $47.

There is a documentation trap on this page too. Vodacom's site still publishes an older version of the travel bundle terms covering a promotion that ran from 10 March 2022 to 28 February 2023. It describes a noticeably different product: a daily subscription fee charged on each day you roam, a bundle that expires after 30 days rather than 7, and availability restricted to contract customers only. The current terms describe a per-bundle fee, a 7-day life, hourly auto-allocation, and eligibility extended to prepaid and top-up customers who hold enough airtime. Both pages rank; only one is live pricing. Check the dates before you plan a trip around either.

One more thing the rate finder will tell you and Vodacom will not

Run Vodacom's own rate finder across Europe and the cards are strikingly consistent. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ukraine and Turkey all return the same numbers: R0.75 per MB standard, R0.55 out of bundle, R99 and R349 bundles.

Malta is the outlier we could not reconcile. Its card returns R125.00 per MB on standard rates, alongside normally-priced R99 and R349 travel bundles and R24.00-a-minute international calls. That looks like the maritime entry Vodacom's terms refer to as "MALTA Maritime" rather than a shore tariff, but the rate finder does not say so. If Malta is on your itinerary, price it in the tool yourself before you fly, and buy the bundle either way.

The wider point holds for any destination: Vodacom's bundle pricing applies in "qualifying countries," and the terms state that outside that footprint "Vodafone world rates" apply instead. A Lotsotravel Europe+ eSIM has no equivalent second tier. The 35 covered countries are the 35 covered countries, at one price.

Dual-SIM workflow for Vodacom customers in Europe

The setup that keeps your South African number live for calls and bank OTPs while your data runs at eSIM prices.

Step 1. Buy the Europe+ eSIM 3-7 days before you fly

Match the plan to your usage. Light users on maps, messaging and the occasional photo upload need 3-5GB per week. Heavy users running video calls or a laptop hotspot want closer to 1-2GB per day. Step 2. Install the eSIM at home

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan QR code. On Android: Settings → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan QR. Label the line "Travel" so it is unmistakable next to your Vodacom line. Apple's own guide to travelling with an eSIM walks through the dual-SIM screens if you want a second reference.

Step 3. Turn off data roaming on the Vodacom line, before you board

Settings → Cellular → tap the Vodacom line → Data Roaming OFF. On Android: Settings → SIMs → Vodacom → Roaming OFF. This is the step that matters most, and it protects you whether or not the eSIM behaves perfectly. With it off, the R0.75 per megabyte standard rate cannot fire. Voice and SMS keep working normally, so banking OTPs still arrive.

Step 4. Configure default lines

• Cellular Data: Travel (the new eSIM)
• Default Voice Line: Vodacom
• iMessage / FaceTime: Vodacom
• Allow Cellular Data Switching: OFF. It stops iOS failing data back to the Vodacom line when the eSIM signal dips in the Paris Métro or a stone-walled restaurant in Rome, which is the most common way travellers trigger charges they thought they had avoided.

Step 5. Activate on arrival

Turn on cellular data for the Travel line when you land. The eSIM attaches to a European partner in 30-60 seconds. Your Vodacom number keeps ringing, and Vodacom bills nothing for data.

What this comparison leaves out

The maths above isolates one variable: the cost of data. Three things sit outside it, and any of them could matter more than price on a given trip.

Voice quality is the first. Both options route through European partner carriers, and quality depends on handset, codec and which partner you are handed to. We have no representative dataset, and as far as we can tell neither does anyone else publishing on this topic.

Hotspot and tethering throughput is the second and harder one. Vodacom roaming inherits whatever tethering rules your South African plan carries; eSIM hotspot speed depends on the local European partner, which sometimes treats roaming traffic differently from its own subscribers. Congestion is the third: roaming agreements can deprioritise traffic during local peak load, and neither side guarantees performance inside a stadium or on a New Year's Eve rooftop.

We also did not model MTN South Africa's roaming bundles, for the reason set out in the methodology: MTN does not publish Europe-specific bundle prices openly, and we are not going to estimate a competitor's pricing from third-party blogs. The buy

Vodacom prices roaming better than most carriers we have measured, and the headline is still a 72-77% saving.

The gap opens with time and data. Two weeks and 10GB is R698 on Vodacom against $10 on a Europe+ eSIM. Three weeks and 15GB is R1,047 against $15. And the number that dwarfs both is R7,680, the standard-rate cost of that same two-week 10GB trip for a traveller who never opted in to a bundle at all.

So the order of operations matters more than the brand. Before you board: turn data roaming off on the Vodacom line, so the R0.75 per megabyte rate cannot fire whatever else goes wrong. Then install a Europe+ eSIM if your trip runs beyond a week or your data runs beyond a gigabyte, and keep your Vodacom number alive for the OTPs.
