The True Cost of e& (Etisalat) UAE Roaming in Europe (2026) vs. Lotsotravel eSIM

Fourteen days through Italy and France costs AED 200 on e&'s cheapest route to Europe, about $54 USD. It costs AED 490, about $133, if you do what most travellers do and buy the AED 35 daily data pack every morning. The same fortnight on a Lotsotravel Europe+ eSIM is $16.99.

The gap between those two e& numbers is the real story here. Unlike Rogers or AT&T, which bill one daily fee and leave you nothing to decide, e& sells at least six different ways to get online in Europe, priced from AED 35 per day to AED 650 per month, and the cheapest one is not the one the app pushes at you in the departures hall. Picking wrong costs more than the eSIM does in total.

To keep this checkable: every e& figure comes from e&'s own published product pages, each one is linked, and we flag the places where e&'s pages contradict each other rather than quoting whichever number flatters us. The two price tags, side by side

e&'s six routes to Europe, priced

There is no Europe-specific product at e&. Europe sits inside the same global roaming footprint as everywhere else, so a traveller flying to Milan picks from the same shelf as one flying to Manila. Here is the whole shelf, read off e&'s own pages on 30 August 2026.

Two things fall out of that table immediately, and neither is advertised.

Roam Like Home weekly is the cheapest way to spend a week in Europe on e&, by a wide margin. AED 100 buys seven days of your home plan's data. The AED 35 daily pack buys not quite three days for the same money. If you are on a postpaid Freedom plan and you are buying daily packs for a week-long trip, you are paying roughly two and a half times more than you need to.

Stacking weekly Roam Like Home packs beats the monthly pack until you pass three and a half weeks. Two weeklies are AED 200 against AED 350 for the month; three are AED 300; only at four weeks does the arithmetic flip, AED 400 against AED 350. Almost every leisure trip to Europe from the UAE falls inside the window where weeklies win.

The catch on both is eligibility. Roam Like Home requires an active postpaid Freedom subscription. Prepaid customers, and postpaid customers on anything else, are shut out of the cheapest option entirely and left choosing between the daily, weekly and monthly roaming packs.

The number nobody quotes: AED 1 per 30KB

e&'s standard roaming rates page puts Europe in the Rest of World zone, and prices data there at AED 1 per 30KB on postpaid, AED 1.5 per 30KB on prepaid.

Run that out. Thirty kilobytes is roughly one low-resolution thumbnail. A megabyte is about AED 34. A gigabyte lands somewhere between AED 33,000 and AED 35,000 depending on whether you count it as 1,000 or 1,024 megabytes, which is roughly $9,100 to $9,500 USD per gigabyte. On prepaid, half again as much.

The voice column is priced with the same logic: AED 4.25 per minute to receive a call, AED 9.50 per minute to call the UAE, AED 13 per minute to call anywhere else, AED 2 per outgoing SMS. Incoming SMS is free, the one line on that page that helps a traveller keeping their UAE number alive for bank OTPs.

You are not supposed to end up here, and most people do not. But the failure mode is real and it is not exotic: your pack lapses at the end of its validity window, or you land before the pack you bought has activated, and the phone carries on syncing photos in the background at AED 34 per megabyte.

What five real trips cost on each side

Five European itineraries, priced against e&'s cheapest available route on each one, not its most expensive. Where Roam Like Home is cheapest, that is what we quote, even though it is only available to postpaid Freedom customers. The saving holds in a steady 63-71% band across every trip length, because Roam Like Home's weekly structure already scales roughly with time rather than punishing long trips the way a pure daily fee does. That is a better showing than Rogers or AT&T manage against the same eSIM, and it is the number an informed e& customer on a Freedom plan should hold in their head.

Now the same five trips on the daily data pack, which is what a traveller who is not on Freedom, or who has not read the fine print, will actually buy:

Same trips, same eSIM, and the saving jumps to 83-88% purely because of which e& product the traveller picked. On a three-week trip the difference between e&'s cheapest and most obvious routes is AED 435, about $118 USD, which is nearly five times what the entire eSIM costs.

The preferred-partner catch

e&'s pack pricing applies on its preferred roaming partners, not on every network your phone can see. That distinction is easy to skim past and expensive to discover.

We read e&'s Preferred Roaming Partners list in full, all 368 country and operator rows. The European coverage is broad:

• UK: all four networks, EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, plus Manx Telecom on the Isle of Man
• France: Bouygues Telecom, Orange, Free Mobile, SFR
• Germany: Telefónica O2, Telekom, Vodafone

Worth noting how the count is described, because e&'s own pages do not agree: the roaming overview says packs are "valid across 138 countries," the weekly combo pack page says "250+ operators in more than 130 countries," and the Roam Like Home page says "200+ operators in more than 100 countries." Those are different products with different footprints, so the discrepancy is probably real rather than sloppy, but it means the number that applies to you depends on which pack you bought. Check the PDF for your specific destination.

The practical risk is border regions and rural areas, where a handset picks whichever signal is strongest rather than whichever is on a list it has never heard of. A Lotsotravel Europe+ eSIM sidesteps this entirely: the 35 covered countries are the 35 covered countries, and there is no second tier of networks that silently bills differently.

When e& roaming is the better choice

e&'s roaming products are not bad, and Roam Like Home in particular is more competitive than most carrier roaming we have priced in this series. Several situations tilt the maths back toward staying on e&.

• A one- or two-day stopover. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are stopover hubs, and a 30-hour layover in Frankfurt or Amsterdam on the AED 35 daily pack costs AED 35-70, roughly $9.53-19. A 1GB Lotsotravel Europe+ plan is $5.99, so the eSIM still wins, but by too little to be worth the bother for one night.
• You need calls more than data. If your trip runs on hotel and office Wi-Fi and what you actually need is your UAE number ringing, the daily combo pack or Roam Like Home's voice tiers do something an eSIM does not. Data-only eSIMs carry no voice plan.
• A corporate e& line. Plenty of UAE employers require roaming through the corporate account for expense and compliance reasons. Roam Like Home's monthly voice and data tiers exist for exactly this, and no eSIM saving is worth an expense-policy argument.
• No eSIM-compatible phone. Pre-2018 iPhones and budget Android handsets without eSIM support leave you with e&'s packs or a physical SIM bought on arrival.

For everyone else, trips of a week or more where data is the main line item, the eSIM wins by 63% at minimum and by up to 88% against the pack most people buy by default.

Dual-SIM workflow for e& customers in Europe

The setup that keeps your UAE number live for calls, bank OTPs and UAE PASS while your data runs at eSIM prices.

Step 1. Buy the Europe+ eSIM 3-7 days before you fly

Match the plan to your usage. Light users on maps, messaging and the occasional photo upload need 3-5GB per week. Heavy users running video calls or a laptop hotspot want closer to 1-2GB per day. Lotsotravel emails a notification when your QR code is ready, then you access it through the website.

Step 2. Install the eSIM at home

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan QR code. On Android: Settings → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan QR. Label the line "Travel" so it is unmistakable next to your e& line. Apple's own guide to travelling with an eSIM covers the dual-SIM screens if you want a second reference.

Step 3. Turn off data roaming on the e& line, before you board

Settings → Cellular → tap the e& line → Data Roaming OFF. This is the step that matters most, and it protects you whether or not the eSIM works perfectly. With it off, the AED 1 per 30KB standard rate cannot fire. Voice and SMS keep working normally, so bank OTPs and UAE PASS codes still arrive.

Step 4. Configure default lines

• Cellular Data: Travel (the new eSIM)
• Default Voice Line: e&
• iMessage / FaceTime: e&
• Allow Cellular Data Switching: OFF. This is not optional. It stops iOS quietly failing data back over to the e& line when the eSIM signal dips in the Paris Métro or a stone-walled restaurant in Rome.

Step 5. Activate on arrival

Turn on cellular data for the Travel line when you land. The eSIM attaches to a European partner in 30-60 seconds. Your UAE number keeps ringing, and e& bills nothing for data.

What this comparison leaves out

The maths above isolates one variable: the cost of data. Three things sit outside it, and any of them could matter more than price on a given trip.

Voice quality is the first. Both options route through European partner carriers, and quality depends on handset, codec and which partner you are handed to. We have no representative dataset, and neither, as far as we can tell, does anyone publishing on this topic.

Hotspot and tethering throughput is the second and harder one. Roam Like Home inherits whatever tethering rules your UAE Freedom plan carries; eSIM hotspot speed depends on the local European partner, which sometimes treats roaming traffic differently from its own subscribers. Congestion is the third: roaming agreements can deprioritise traffic during local peak load, and neither side guarantees performance inside a stadium or on a New Year's Eve rooftop.

We also did not model du's roaming bundles, for the reason set out in the methodology below: du does not publish Europe-specific pack prices on the open web, and we are not going to estimate a competitor's pricing from third-party blogs.
