EURO 2028 in Dublin: Seven Matches, One Border, and the Plan That Ignores It

Everyone reads the EURO 2028 venue list the same way. Eight grounds in Britain, one in Ireland, so the Irish one must be the small one.

It is not. Dublin Arena hosts seven matches, more than any venue in the tournament except Wembley, and one of them is a quarter-final whose winner walks straight into a Wembley semi-final four days later.

It is also the one ground where a UK eSIM does nothing at all.

Seven matches, and Ireland's first

Dublin Arena describes EURO 2028 as Ireland welcoming a major international football competition for the first time, which after two Europa League finals and decades of internationals is a fair way to put it. The stadium's own fixture list reads:

The stadium flags 12, 16 and 21 June specifically: those are the Republic of Ireland's group games if Ireland qualify directly. All three carry the Group E head, and all three are at home.

The dates people should be looking at, though, are the last two. The round of 16 tie on 27 June sends its winner to a quarter-final in Glasgow on 1 July. The quarter-final on 30 June sends its winner to a semi-final at Wembley on 4 July. Dublin is not a cul-de-sac in this bracket. It is a junction.

Getting to the ground

The stadium sits in Ballsbridge, south-east of the centre, and it is one of the more civilised arrivals in the tournament.

Lansdowne Road station is at the foot of the stadium on the DART, the coastal commuter line that runs from Malahide and Howth in the north down to Bray and Greystones in the south. Grand Canal Dock is the next stop towards town. The stadium's travel page also lists bus routes, the Luas tram and cycle approaches, and Transport for Ireland covers the whole network in one journey planner.

From the city centre it is about a twenty-minute walk, which many people do rather than fight for a DART seat. That walk is where the phone works hardest: a map, a group that has scattered across four pubs, and a decision about which way to go home afterwards.

The border your phone notices

This is the part of EURO 2028 that no amount of shared geography changes.

England, Scotland and Wales are one mobile market. The Republic of Ireland is a different country with different networks. A UK eSIM does not work in Dublin, and an Irish eSIM does not work at Wembley. There is no clever setting that fixes this. They are separate products.

For anyone whose home SIM is European, there is a second wrinkle. The United Kingdom left the EU's Roam Like At Home regime when the Brexit transition period ended, and the House of Commons Library briefing sets out what that means in practice: UK operators are no longer legally obliged to give surcharge-free EEA roaming, and EU operators are no longer legally obliged to include the UK. Many still do, on both sides, as a commercial choice. Choices get revised. Country lists get edited. Reading yours before you travel takes two minutes and is the only reliable answer.

Europe+ against the alternatives

The comparison people expect is Europe+ against a UK plan. The more useful one is Europe+ against two country plans, because that is what a UK-plus-Ireland trip needs if you buy nationally.

The regional plan is the same price as either national plan on both of these tiers and half the price of buying both. There is no tier at which buying a UK plan and an Ireland plan separately is the better deal, and there is a real operational cost to it as well: two profiles on one handset, and one of them wrong every time you land.

Practical notes for a Dublin match day

The clock is the same. Ireland and the UK both run on UTC+1 in June and July. Dublin Arena publishes UEFA's three kick-off slots in Irish time as 14:00, 17:00 and 20:00, and those are the local times at all nine grounds. No mental arithmetic, no missed kick-off because you flew in from Glasgow.

Tickets come later than you think. The stadium says tickets go on sale after the final draw, with ticketing phases and allocations detailed in autumn 2027. Your data plan should come much later still: validity counts from activation, so buying an eSIM in 2027 for a 2028 trip wastes it.
