The Estádio do Maracanã bookends the entire Women's World Cup: hosts Brazil open there on June 24, a quarter-final and one of the two semi-finals run through it, and on July 25 it stages the final. The stadium and getting there

The Maracanã sits in Rio's Zona Norte, a few kilometres northwest of the postcard beaches, and it is the rare mega-stadium with simple transit. Its own station, Maracanã, sits across a walkway from the grounds, served by Metrô Line 2 and SuperVia's commuter trains. From Copacabana or Ipanema you are looking at a metro ride with a connection. From Centro it is quicker.

Two practical notes. Match-day crowds at a 73,139-capacity stadium mean the station and the walkway pack out before and after the game, so give yourself margin, especially for the opener and the final. And plan your return leg before kickoff, while your phone still has an uncongested network. The moment 70,000 people open maps and rideshare apps at once is the moment you do not want to be starting from scratch.

Rideshare works well in Rio too. Drop-off and pickup points shift on big event days, which is one more reason the app, and the data behind it, matters.

What match day does to your data

A Maracanã day is a full day out. The metro or train in, maps to your gate, the mobile ticket, group chats to find your crowd, photos and clips once the football starts. It adds up to 1–3 GB before you are back at your hotel, and the heavy moments cluster around kickoff and goals, which is also when the network is busiest.

No plan gets you a private lane inside a full stadium. Not a local SIM, not an eSIM, not roaming. What you can control is having everything important downloaded before you walk in, and not paying carrier roaming rates for the privilege.
