EURO 2028 in Manchester and Liverpool: Two Grounds, Fifty Minutes Apart

Most EURO 2028 host cities are a long way from the next one. Manchester and Liverpool are the exception. Thirty-five miles apart, under an hour on a direct train, five matches each, and a bracket that eventually funnels both of their round of 16 winners into the same quarter-final.

If you are building a trip around the group stage rather than around one team, this pair is the most efficient corner of the tournament.

Manchester City Stadium: England's opener, if England get there

Fifty-eight thousand seats, home to Manchester City since 2003, and the ground that hosted the 2008 UEFA Cup final and rugby and boxing at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Its EURO 2028 allocation:

UEFA has published where each home association plays its group games if it qualifies directly, and England start here: one match at the Manchester City Stadium, then two at Wembley. That single line will shape hotel prices in Manchester for 10 June more than anything else on the schedule.

Getting to the ground is the easy part of a Manchester match day. Metrolink runs to Etihad Campus and Velopark, about ten minutes out from Piccadilly, and the walk from the tram stop is short enough that it stays walkable in a crowd.

Everton Stadium: the newest ground in the tournament

Everton's stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock is the only one of the nine that did not exist when the bid was made. It seats 50,000, hosted its first Premier League match in August 2025, and sits directly on the Mersey waterfront north of the city centre.

Sandhills, on the Merseyrail Northern line, is the closest station at roughly a mile from the dock. Moorfields and Lime Street leave you in the city centre, which is a longer walk but puts you where the evening is. Merseytravel publishes the live position on both.

The waterfront location is worth a practical note: it is exposed, it is a long approach on foot, and everyone walks the same way at the same time afterwards. That is a lot of phone time in one direction.

The one date where the two cities collide

Look at 20 June again. Manchester has C4 vs C1. Liverpool has C2 vs C3.

That is the final round of Group C, played simultaneously in two cities fifty minutes apart, which is exactly how tournament football is meant to work and exactly the sort of thing that ruins a plan built on the assumption you can see both. You pick one. The other is on a screen.

Where the north west leads

The interesting structural fact about this pair is what happens after the round of 16.

The Liverpool round of 16 winner from 24 June and the Manchester round of 16 winner from 25 June meet in the quarter-final at the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff on 1 July. Two north-west knockout ties, one South Wales quarter-final. If you have tickets to both round of 16 games, you already know where you are going on 1 July, and it is a four-hour train ride away.

That quarter-final's winner then goes to Wembley for the 5 July semi-final. The whole path is inside the United Kingdom, which makes the north west the one corner of the bracket where a UK-only plan would technically hold up.

What to buy

A two-city trip is a train-heavy trip, and train-heavy trips are map-heavy and departure-board-heavy. Budget 1 to 3 GB per match day and treat the travel days between cities as match days for sizing purposes, because the phone works just as hard.
