The best eSIM for Italy on most trips is our country plan on Vodafone: 10GB for 15 days costs $7.95. If you use your phone heavily, a daily plan is cheaper still for short stays, with 1GB a day for 10 days at $6.95. Add France or Switzerland to the route and the 33-country Europe plan does the same job on one install, for $1 more at 10GB.
Two groups can skip this guide. If your phone is carrier-locked or has no eSIM support, nothing here will install, so run through our eSIM compatibility guide first. And if you need an Italian phone number for calls, a local SIM card does that job. Our plans carry data only.
Key takeaways
- Italy only: 10GB for 15 days costs $7.95.
- Daily plan: 1GB a day for 10 days costs $6.95.
- Every Italy country plan runs on Vodafone.
- Crossing into France or Switzerland? Take the Europe plan.
- The Trevi Fountain basin costs €2, card only at the gate.
What's new in Italy for 2026 and 2027?
Rome now charges to step down to the Trevi Fountain, Turin hosts the ATP Finals in November, and Monza has its 2027 Formula 1 date. A new EU border system also changes what happens when you land.
| Date | What happens | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Since 2 February 2026 | €2 ticket for the Trevi Fountain basin, daily 9am to 10pm | Rome |
| 15 to 22 November 2026 | Nitto ATP Finals at the Inalpi Arena | Turin |
| 3 to 5 September 2027 | Italian Grand Prix, a Sprint weekend | Monza |
| Until 31 December 2027 | Trevi Fountain ticket scheme runs | Rome |
Two of those need a phone with data. The Trevi ticket is sold online and at the entrance by card only, so you may be buying it on the spot. And Monza's 2026 race drew 403,666 spectators over the weekend, according to the circuit. Our Monza eSIM guide covers race weekend, and our ATP Finals Turin guide covers the tennis.
Which Italy eSIM plan should you buy?
Buy the Italy plan if Italy is your only country, and the Europe plan if you cross a border. The Italy plan is the same price or cheaper at every size we checked.
| Plan (fixed data) | Covers | 5 days | 10 days | 15 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Italy 5GB | Italy | $4.95 | $5.95 | $5.95 | $5.95 |
| Italy 10GB | Italy | $6.95 | $7.95 | $7.95 | $8.95 |
| Italy 20GB | Italy | $12.95 | $13.95 | $14.95 | $14.95 |
| Italy 30GB | Italy | $16.95 | $18.95 | $19.95 | $20.95 |
| Europe 10GB | 33 countries | $7.95 | $8.95 | $8.95 | $8.95 |
| Europe 20GB | 33 countries | $12.95 | $13.95 | $14.95 | $15.95 |
Prices are what you pay through the links on this blog, read from our live product feed on 30 October 2026.
Here is how to size it:
- A long weekend in Rome or Venice: 5GB for 5 days, $4.95.
- One to two weeks: 10GB for 15 days, $7.95. The 10-day plan costs the same, so take the longer one.
- Maps, trains and nightly photo uploads, or a laptop on hotspot: 20GB for 15 days, $14.95.
- A month in Italy: 10GB for 30 days at $8.95, or 30GB for $20.95 if you work online.
When a daily plan is the better buy
At 15 days, Italy's daily plans cost less than our Europe ones: 1GB a day is $9.95 here and $15.95 on the Europe plan. At most other lengths the two cost the same. Each one gives you a set amount at full speed every day; after that, speed drops to 384 kbps until the next day.
| Plan (daily allowance) | Full speed per day | 5 days | 10 days | 15 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Italy Unlimited | 1GB | $4.95 | $6.95 | $9.95 | $18.95 |
| Italy Unlimited | 2GB | $6.95 | $11.95 | $17.95 | $33.95 |
| Italy Unlimited | 3GB | $8.95 | $15.95 | $23.95 | $46.95 |
At 10 days, 1GB a day costs $6.95 and gives you 10GB at full speed over the trip, $1 less than the 10GB fixed plan. The catch is that a quiet day's data does not roll over. If your days look alike, take the daily plan. If you will spend some days on a beach and others streaming on a train, take a fixed bucket.
Which network does an Italy eSIM use?
Every Italy country plan we sell listed Vodafone when we checked on 30 October, all 35 of them. The 33-country Europe plan also used Vodafone for Italy, so you get the same network either way. Your phone shows the name once the eSIM connects.
The 27-country EU plan is the exception. It runs on Wind in Italy and is built for heavy use: 10GB a day at full speed, then 5 Mbps until the next day. Five days cost $20.95 and 10 days $36.95. That only makes sense if you are replacing home broadband for a week.
Italy and the rest of Europe on one eSIM
The 33-country Europe plan covers Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Croatia, Spain and every other EU country, plus the UK, Norway, Iceland and Turkey. The data is one shared pool across every country, so size it for the whole route rather than per stop.
On 30 October 2026, Europe 10GB for 15 days cost $8.95 and 20GB for 15 days cost $14.95. Our Europe eSIM travel guide lists every country it covers. Heading south afterwards? Our guide to the best eSIM for Turkey covers Istanbul, and our guide to the best eSIM for Morocco covers the trip across the Mediterranean, which the Europe plan does not reach.
City notes: Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence and Turin
The phone rules are the same everywhere in Italy. What changes city to city is what you will use it for.
- Rome. The Trevi Fountain basin now costs €2 for tourists and non-residents, sold online or at the gate by card only, per Turismo Roma. Residents of the Rome area, children under 5, and people with disabilities and their carers enter free. Our Rome restaurant guide covers where to eat afterwards.
- Milan. The UK government's latest advice, updated on 29 October 2026, reports recent demonstrations across northern Italian cities and a larger police and military presence in Milan. Check it before you go. Our Milan restaurant guide covers the food.
- Venice and Florence. Both are walking cities where an offline map saves data. Our guides to Venice and Florence and Tuscany list the award-winning restaurants with a map.
- Turin. The ATP Finals run from 15 to 22 November 2026 at the Inalpi Arena, according to Turismo Torino.
- Everywhere. The UK safety advice warns of bag-snatching and pickpocketing in city centres and at major sights. It also says transport strikes are often called at short notice, and to use only licensed taxis, booked by phone, by app or from an official rank.
For the whole country, our Italy restaurant guide collects every city in one place.
How do you buy an eSIM for Italy?
Buy the plan a few days before the trip and install it at home.
- Check the phone. It must support eSIM and be unlocked by your carrier. Our compatibility guide covers how to check.
- Buy the plan. Your QR code arrives by email and on the website, with no app needed.
- Install it on Wi-Fi at home. Scan the QR code and label the new line "Italy".
- Leave it off for the flight. Keep your home SIM on for calls and bank texts.
- Switch it on when you land. At Rome, Milan or Venice, turn on the eSIM line and turn on data roaming for that line only.
If the phone shows signal but no data flows, our iPhone and Android troubleshooting guides cover the usual fixes.
Do you need a visa for Italy?
Most short-stay visitors do not. The UK government says British citizens can travel to the Schengen area, which includes Italy, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the same 90.
The same page says the EU's new Entry/Exit System is now being rolled out across the Schengen area. On your first entry you may be sent to a booth to register your fingerprints and a photo before passport control, at no cost. Allow extra time at the airport.
Canada's travel advice, last updated on 22 October 2026, says Canadians need no tourist visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It asks Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution in Italy because of the threat of terrorism, and notes demonstrations in several cities.
Where an Italy eSIM falls short
Our Italy plans give you mobile data on one network and nothing else. Check these limits before you buy.
- No local phone number. Anyone who needs to call or text you locally will have to use WhatsApp or another app over data.
- One network. Every country plan runs on Vodafone, with no second operator to fall back on.
- No speed tests. We have not measured speeds on the ground, and we make no 5G claim for any plan.
Setting it up before you fly
Buy the plan a few days early and install it at home. Leave the eSIM line switched off until the plane lands, then turn it on with data roaming enabled for that line. Our general troubleshooting guide covers anything else.

Methodology
How we did this comparison
Lotsotravel prices come from our live v3 product API (/api/v3/products?country=IT and ?region=europe), read on 30 October 2026, with and without the blog's referral id. We quote the VIP price, which is what you pay when you arrive through a link on this blog. We quote the Italy country plans, the 33-country Europe plan and the 27-country EU high-speed plan, and leave out the Global plans, which cost more per gigabyte in Italy.
The network claim is read per plan. Every Italy country plan (countryCount 1 in the API, 35 of 35) listed Vodafone on that date, and so did the 33-country Europe plan for its Italy leg. The 27-country plan listed Wind for Italy. Our supplier's catalogue can change, which is what the carrierVerified date tracks.
Plans sold as "Unlimited" give a daily full-speed allowance that resets each day, then a reduced speed until the next day. We state that speed for each plan we quote.
Entry and safety rules come from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Government of Canada. Event dates and fees come from the organisers: Turismo Roma, Turismo Torino and the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.
What this post does not measure: we ran no speed tests in Italy, we did not test 5G on our plans, and we do not compare customer support. The plans are data only, with no Italian phone number.
