Can Djokovic Qualify for the ATP Finals 2026? The Maths

Updated Oct 22, 202610 sources cited

Yes, Djokovic can qualify for the ATP Finals, but he needs help or a big finish. As of 22 October 2026, he is eleventh in the live race. His 2,840 points leave him 319 behind Jodar, who holds the last qualifying place. Basel and the Paris Masters are worth up to 1,500, and only winning both guarantees Turin.

    Key takeaways

    • He is 11th, outside the cut.
    • He has two events left.
    • He must pass two of the six ahead.
    • Two titles would make him certain.
    • He cannot go out before the final week.

Where does Djokovic stand in the race to Turin?

Djokovic is 11th, two places outside the cut. Beijing gave him his 102nd career title on 7 October and lifted him six places to ninth. Shanghai then went better for the players around him, and he slipped back.

    6Daniil Medvedev3,470+630
    7Frances Tiafoe3,380+540
    8Arthur Fils3,375+535
    9Rafael Jodar3,159+319 (last qualifying place)
    10Alex de Minaur2,880+40 (first out)
    11Novak Djokovic2,840n/a
    12Tommy Paul2,635-205
    13Taylor Fritz2,580-260

Three players have already qualified: Zverev, Alcaraz and Shelton. Sinner is out for the rest of the season, per the tour's 19 October update. That leaves five places for the chasers in the table.

How does qualification work after Sinner's withdrawal?

The top seven in the race after the final Masters event of the year qualify, per the tour's rankings FAQ. An eighth place goes to a 2026 major champion ranked eighth to 20th, if one exists. If not, it goes to the player in eighth.

He has no major-champion route this year. All four 2026 majors went to players already in the top four, so he needs the race alone.

Sinner's absence moves the cut down one place. The rulebook replaces a withdrawn player with the next one on the list. That is why the tour's 18 October update treats ninth place as the last qualifying spot. Turin also gets an alternate: the first player outside the cut, who plays only if someone withdraws.

The race counts 2026 results only. Nothing drops off before the cut, so we model no drop-offs.

How many points can Djokovic still win?

Up to 1,500. He has a wild card for Basel, a 500-level event that starts on 26 October. It is his first visit there since 2011. Paris adds up to 1,000 more, and he is on the official acceptance list.

    Paris Masters (1000)2 to 8 NovQF 200, SF 400, F 650, W 1000add to the Basel figure

Round values come from chapter 9 of the rulebook. A 500 result counts only if it is among his best six results at that level and below. The live race shows the net figure as soon as a match ends.

What does Djokovic need to qualify?

He needs to finish above at least two of the six players ahead of him while nobody behind passes him. Suppose those six never scored again. A Basel title would then take him to 3,340. A Paris semi-final would take him to 3,240, and both totals clear ninth place. The six will keep scoring, though: Fils and Jodar are in his draw that week, and four others play in Austria.

Our script gives every rival the best results their draws allow. Then it counts how many could still reach his total. Five places are open, so four rivals at or above him still leaves him in.

    Wins Basel, Paris semi-final3,7407No
Wins Basel, out early in Paris3,34010No

"Not certain" does not mean out. The rival counts are worst cases, and each needs several chasers to win big in the same fortnight.

Every row in the table is a scenario, not a prediction.

When could Djokovic be mathematically eliminated?

During the final week, at the earliest. Suppose he loses his first match in Switzerland. A Paris title would still take him to 3,840. To knock him out before the final week, five rivals would need more than 3,840 by 1 November. Our script finds four at most, and each of them would need a title or a deep run this week or next.

He arrives at the last event alive whatever happens in Basel. Elimination needs five players above his remaining ceiling, which can only happen once his own draw there has ended.

    Which tournament could decide it?

The fourth column shows the most any one chaser can still add once that week is done.

Basel is where he can hurt two rivals directly. Every round he wins there is a round that Fils or Jodar cannot. The player list also includes Shelton and Fritz.

The rest of the 2026 race has its own pages: who has qualified so far, with every contender and the cut, the maths for Medvedev, and our guide to the arena, the trams and the data.

What does this maths leave out?

The page counts race points and nothing else. It holds no view on form, fitness or the indoor courts, and it carries no odds. A withdrawal by him or anyone else would change the entry lists, and we would rerun the numbers. The methodology note below has the full method.

    Frequently asked questions

Can Djokovic qualify for the ATP Finals in 2026?+
Yes, mathematically. The Live Race on 22 October 2026 had him 11th on 2,840 points, 319 behind Rafael Jodar in the last qualifying place. He has two events left, Basel and the Paris Masters, worth up to 1,500 points, so his ceiling is 4,340. He needs to finish above at least two of the six players currently ahead of him.
What does Djokovic need to qualify for Turin?+
Winning both Basel and Paris (4,340) is the only result that makes him certain whatever anyone else does: no more than three rivals can reach that total. Any smaller haul depends on others. A Paris title alone gives 3,840, and up to six rivals could still finish above it, though in practice they would have to win big in the same weeks.
Is Djokovic playing Basel in 2026?+
Yes. ATP reported on 18 October 2026 that Djokovic has a wild card for the Swiss Indoors Basel, an ATP 500 from 26 October to 1 November, his first appearance there since 2011. Arthur Fils, Rafael Jodar and Ben Shelton are in the same field, so Basel is a direct fight with two of the players he has to pass.
Can Djokovic be knocked out of the Race before Paris?+
No. Even if he loses his first match in Basel, a Paris title would still take him to 3,840. Our script finds that no more than four rivals can be above that before Paris begins, and five would be needed. His Race can only end mathematically during Paris week, from 2 to 8 November.
How many times has Djokovic won the ATP Finals?+
Seven. ATP called him the seven-time champion in its 18 October 2026 Race update. He has also won the Paris Masters seven times and, on 7 October 2026, won his seventh Beijing title, the 102nd tour-level title of his career, which lifted him six places in the Race.
Does Djokovic lose any points before the Finals cut?+
No. The Race To Turin counts only 2026 results, so no old points drop off before the cut on the Monday after Paris. The 52-week ATP Rankings work differently and do shed old results, but those do not decide who plays in Turin. This page models no drop-offs for that reason.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

This post counts PIF ATP Race To Turin points only. The base is the ATP Live Race To Turin page as we read it on 22 October 2026, during the Almaty, Lyon and Brussels events, checked against ATP's dated Live Race articles of 7, 18 and 19 October. Qualification rules come from ATP's Rankings FAQ and Chapter IV of the 2026 ATP Rulebook. Round points come from Chapter IX of the rulebook: ATP 250 (250-165-100-50-25), ATP 500 (500-330-200-100-50) and the 56-draw Masters 1000 in Paris (1000-650-400-200-100-50-10).

Remaining entries come from the official Paris acceptance list, the Basel and Vienna player pages and ATP's own previews. The Race is a calendar-year count of 2026 results, so no points drop off before Paris and we model none. A 250 or 500 result counts only if it is among a player's best six such results, so it can add less than face value; our scenarios use face value. Our "certain" lines come from a script that gives every rival the best results their draws allow, ignoring bracket positions, so they are cautious.

We do not predict form, injuries, withdrawals or match results, and we use no betting odds. We update this post after each tournament.
