Can Medvedev Qualify for Turin? The 2026 ATP Finals Maths

Updated Oct 22, 202611 sources cited

Yes, Medvedev can qualify for Turin, and he holds a place today. On 22 October 2026 he won his opening match in Almaty to reach the quarter-finals. That took him to 3,470 points, sixth in the live race. Turin takes the top nine minus Jannik Sinner, who is out for the season. Medvedev sits 311 points above the last place, with up to 1,700 left.

    Key takeaways

    • He sits sixth, inside the cut.
    • Jodar holds the last place, 311 points below him.
    • He can still add points in three events.
    • Titles in Almaty and Vienna would seal it before Paris.
    • He cannot be knocked out before the final week.

Where does Medvedev stand in the race to Turin?

Sixth is a qualifying position. Shanghai, where he reached the semi-finals, left him on 3,420 in the tour's 19 October update. Almaty has added 50 since, for his quarter-final.

    9Rafael Jodar3,159Last qualifying place
    10Alex de Minaur2,880First out
    11Novak Djokovic2,840Second out

The gap that matters is the one below him. He leads de Minaur, the first player outside the cut, by 590. That matches the margin in the tour's Almaty report.

How does ATP Finals qualification work in 2026?

The top seven in the race after the last Masters event of the year qualify, according to the tour's rankings FAQ. That event is in Paris. The eighth place goes to a 2026 major champion ranked eighth to 20th, if there is one. If not, it goes to the player in eighth.

The major-champion exception will not apply in 2026. All four of this year's majors went to players who already sit in the top four.

Sinner's absence moves the cut down a place. The rulebook replaces a withdrawn player with the next one on the list, and the next one after that becomes the alternate. With Sinner out, the tour's 18 October update calls ninth place "effectively the final qualifying position".

The race counts only 2026 results. The event overview describes them as points earned "throughout the season". Nothing drops off before the cut, so this page models no drop-offs.

How many points can Medvedev still win?

Up to 1,700, across three events. He is in the quarter-finals in Almaty. He plays the Vienna 500 from 26 October, where he is in the Erste Bank Open field. He is also on the official acceptance list for the Paris Masters.

Points per round come from chapter 9 of the rulebook. His ceiling is 5,170.

One catch applies. A result at a 250 or 500 counts only if it is among a player's best six such results. For a busy player, a new result can add less than its face value. His title in Hangzhou, worth 250, lifted his race total by only 240. Paris counts in full, because it is a mandatory event.

What does Medvedev need to qualify?

He needs nothing if nobody below him scores again, since 3,470 already beats the last place. Certainty is harder, because up to nine rivals could still pass 3,470 on paper. Our script gives every rival the best results their draws allow. Then it counts how many of them could still reach his total.

Five places are open, so four rivals at his number still leaves him in. Only the double in Kazakhstan and Austria settles it before the last draw is made.

Every row above is a scenario, not a forecast. The rows use face value, so a title that adds less under the best-six rule would push the safe line up a little.

When could Medvedev be mathematically eliminated?

Not before Paris. Suppose he scores nothing more this week or next. A title at the last Masters event would still take him to 4,470. No rival can be above that before the final week, because the highest any chaser can reach by then is 4,290.

Elimination needs five players above his ceiling. That can only happen during the final week, once his own draw has ended and the others have banked their points.

    Which tournament could decide it?

The fourth column shows the most any one chaser can still add once that week is done. A rival who trails by more than that cannot catch up.

Vienna is the week to watch. Cobolli, Tiafoe, de Minaur and Paul are all in that draw, so every match he wins there can cost a rival.

The rest of the 2026 race has its own pages: who has qualified so far, with every contender and the cut, the maths for Djokovic, and our guide to the arena, the trams and the data.

What does this maths leave out?

The numbers count race points and nothing else. They hold no view on who plays better indoors, they guess at no injuries, and they carry no odds. A withdrawal, a retirement or a late wild card would change the entry lists, and we would rerun the script. The full method sits in the methodology note below.

    Frequently asked questions

Can Medvedev qualify for Turin in 2026?+
Yes, and he holds a qualifying place now. The Live Race on 22 October 2026 had him sixth on 3,470 points. With Jannik Sinner out for the season, the eight places go to the top nine minus Sinner, and Medvedev is 311 points above Rafael Jodar in the last spot. He can still add up to 1,700 points in Almaty, Vienna and Paris.
Can Medvedev still qualify for the ATP Finals if he loses early?+
Yes. He cannot be knocked out before Paris: even with no more points before then, his ceiling is 4,470, and no rival can get that high before Paris begins. Early losses would leave his place in the hands of Cobolli, Tiafoe, Fils, Jodar and the players behind them, because up to nine rivals could still pass 3,470 on paper.
What does Medvedev need to be certain of a place?+
On face-value points, winning both Almaty and Vienna takes him to 4,170 before Paris, a total no more than four rivals can reach, so he would be in before the Paris draw. Without that double, reaching the Paris final would also do it, and any final total of 4,195 or more is enough whatever happens elsewhere.
When is the ATP Finals cut for 2026?+
The cut is the Race standings on the Monday after the Paris Masters, which ends on Sunday 8 November 2026. The top seven qualify, plus up to two of this year's Grand Slam champions ranked eighth to 20th. With Sinner out, the next player in line takes his place, so in practice the top nine minus Sinner go to Turin.
Has Medvedev won the ATP Finals before?+
Yes. Medvedev won the Nitto ATP Finals in 2020. He missed the 2025 event, his first absence since 2018, which is why the 2026 Race matters so much to him. The 2026 Finals run from 15 to 22 November at the Inalpi Arena in Turin.
Do Medvedev's ranking points from last year drop off before Turin?+
No. Qualification uses the Race To Turin, which only counts results from the 2026 season, so nothing he won in late 2025 can fall away before Paris. That is different from the 52-week PIF ATP Rankings, where old points do drop. This post models no drop-offs for that reason.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

This post counts PIF ATP Race To Turin points only. The base is the ATP Live Race To Turin page as we read it on 22 October 2026, during the Almaty, Lyon and Brussels events, checked against ATP's dated Live Race articles of 18 and 19 October. Qualification rules come from ATP's Rankings FAQ and Chapter IV of the 2026 ATP Rulebook. Round points come from Chapter IX of the rulebook: ATP 250 (250-165-100-50-25), ATP 500 (500-330-200-100-50) and the 56-draw Masters 1000 in Paris (1000-650-400-200-100-50-10).

Remaining entries come from the official Paris acceptance list, the Basel and Vienna player pages and ATP's own previews. The Race is a calendar-year count of 2026 results, so no points drop off before Paris and we model none. A 250 or 500 result counts only if it is among a player's best six such results, so it can add less than face value; our scenarios use face value. Our "guaranteed" lines come from a script that gives every rival the best results their draws allow, ignoring bracket positions, so they are cautious.

We do not predict form, injuries, withdrawals or match results, and we use no betting odds. We update this post after each tournament.
