The best eSIM for UK trips this winter is our UK country plan on Vodafone: 10GB for 15 days costs $7.95 (data only, no UK number). If Dublin or Paris is on the same ticket, take the 33-country Europe plan instead. Two openings frame the season: the Absurd City attraction opened at Westfield London on 15 October 2026, and the free London Museum opens at Smithfield on 28 November.
Tourism firms expect a busy winter. UKinbound, the trade body for inbound tourism, surveyed its members, and the results came out on 21 October 2026. Of those firms, 73% expect October to December to match or beat last year. German visitors showed the strongest growth.
Skip this guide if your phone is carrier-locked or has no eSIM support, because none of these plans will install. Our eSIM compatibility guide shows how to check in a minute.
Key takeaways
- UK only. 10GB for 15 days costs $7.95 on Vodafone.
- UK plus Ireland or the mainland. The 33-country plan costs $8.95 for the same 10GB.
- Data only. You get no UK phone number.
- Entry permit. Most visitors need a £20 ETA before they fly.
- New this winter. The free London Museum opens on 28 November.
What's new in the UK for travellers in late 2026 and 2027?
Four new things open or return between mid-October and late November, and 2027 adds two big sporting events. Here they are in date order, each sourced to the organiser or the tourism board.
Absurd City, Westfield London (open since 15 October). An 80,000-square-foot walk-through world now fills the first floor of the shopping centre. A real double-decker bus sits inside it. Its launch listing says to allow about three hours. Time Out gave it four stars out of five on 13 October and lists tickets at £22.95 to £39.95.
Royal Marines Experience, Portsmouth (from 24 October). The dockyard opens its new attraction on Saturday 24 October. Ultimate Experience annual tickets include it, and adult dockyard tickets start from £36. The same UK plan covers the trip down to the south coast.
The Lord Mayor's Show (14 November). The procession sets off at 11am on Saturday 14 November, per the official site. A news roundup from 21 October reports that this year's show returns to its river roots with a pageant on the water.
London Museum, Smithfield (from 28 November). The museum opens in a historic market building, and entry is free, according to the museum's own page. Go early. Expect queues on the first weekends.
The Bayeux Tapestry, British Museum. It went on show on 10 September 2026. It stays until 11 July 2027. VisitEngland says this is its first display here in more than 900 years. The same release names 2027 the Year of the Normans. William the Conqueror was born 1,000 years earlier.
Tour de France Grand Départ, Edinburgh (2 July 2027). The race leaves Scotland's capital on Friday 2 July. It then spends two more days on UK roads and finishes stage 3 in Wales, per the Tour's own Grand Départ page. The teams are presented at the castle two days before.
The 155th Open, St Andrews (11 to 18 July 2027). The R&A brings the championship back to the town's Old Course for the 31st time.

Which is the best eSIM for UK trips: a UK plan or a regional plan?
Buy the UK country plan when Britain is your only stop, and the 33-country plan when you also cross to Ireland or the mainland. On 22 October 2026, the UK plan was a dollar cheaper for the same 10GB, and the regional plan saved you a second purchase and a second install.
| Plan (fixed data) | Covers | 5 days | 10 days | 15 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom 3GB | UK | none | $4.95 | $4.95 | $4.95 |
| United Kingdom 5GB | UK | $4.95 | $5.95 | $5.95 | $5.95 |
| United Kingdom 10GB | UK | $6.95 | $7.95 | $7.95 | $8.95 |
| United Kingdom 20GB | UK | $12.95 | $13.95 | $14.95 | $14.95 |
| Europe 5GB | 33 countries | $4.95 | $5.95 | $5.95 | $6.95 |
| Europe 10GB | 33 countries | $7.95 | $8.95 | $8.95 | $8.95 |
| Europe 20GB | 33 countries | $12.95 | $13.95 | $14.95 | $15.95 |
Prices are what you pay through the links on this blog, read from our live product feed on 22 October 2026.
The regional plan covers the UK and Ireland plus 31 more countries, France and Spain among them. Take 10 days split between London and Dublin. The 10GB regional plan for 10 days costs $8.95 and needs one install. Its data is shared. A heavy week in one city leaves less for the other. Streamers should size up to 20GB, which costs $13.95 for the 10 days. Our 2027 guide to multi-country trips covers longer routes on the same plan.
Every UK country plan listed Vodafone as its network on 22 October. To see how that network compares with the other UK networks on the regulator's coverage data, read our UK carrier breakdown.
How much data do you need for London?
Take 10GB for any UK trip up to 15 days. Going from 5GB to 10GB costs $2 at most on the country plans, which is cheap insurance against running out on day nine.
A visitor's phone does a lot of work here. You tap it on Tube and bus readers, navigate between stations, book theatre seats, and post photos each evening. None of that uses much data by itself. Video calls home and short-form video apps do.
A quick way to size it:
-
Weekend or up to 5 days: 10GB for 5 days, $6.95. If you mostly use hotel Wi-Fi, 5GB costs $4.95.
-
One to two weeks: 10GB for 15 days, $7.95, the same price as 10 days.
-
Laptop hotspot or nightly uploads: 20GB for 15 days, $14.95.
-
A month: 10GB for 30 days at $8.95, or 20GB at $14.95.
Football fans planning further ahead can read our 2028 football championship guide on getting a signal at the two stadiums and on the Tube. Motorsport fans will find circuit advice in our British race guide.
Does a UK eSIM give you a UK phone number?
No. Our UK and regional plans carry data only, with no UK number for calls or texts.
Data alone covers most visitors. WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet calls work over the data connection, and so do ride-hailing and food-delivery apps that sign in with your existing account. What a data-only plan cannot do is receive a text sent to a UK number, or let a landlord or employer call you on one.
Here is the setup that keeps your home number reachable without daily roaming fees:
-
Install at home. Do it on Wi-Fi, a few days before you fly.
-
Keep your home line on. It still receives calls and texted sign-in codes.
-
Turn data roaming off on the home line, so it cannot start a daily pass.
-
Make the eSIM your data line, with data roaming on for that line only.
If you need a UK number for a job, a rental or a long study stay, buy a pay-as-you-go plan from a UK network once you arrive.
Do you need a UK ETA, and how much does it cost?
You probably do, and it costs £20. The UK government says most visitors need either an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) or a visa. You usually need an ETA, not a visa, if you come from Europe, the USA, Australia, Canada or certain other countries, per its ETA guidance.
The points that catch people out:
- Everyone needs their own. Babies and children need an ETA too, so a family of four pays £80.
- British and Irish passports are exempt. So are people who already have permission to live, work or study in the UK.
- It covers stays of up to six months.
- Use the official route. The government page warns against lookalike sites that charge extra.
Apply well before the trip. If you leave it until the airport, you will be filling in forms on roaming data.
Where a UK eSIM falls short
A data plan solves the connection, and that is all it does. Check these limits before you buy.
- No UK number. Services that demand a local number for sign-in will not accept the eSIM.
- One network. The UK plans run on a single network. We ran no speed tests, so we make no claim about how it performs on your route.
- Shared regional data. On the regional plan, every country draws from the same allowance.
Setting it up before you fly
Buy early. Lotsotravel is an independent travel eSIM provider, and the whole process runs on the website, with no app to install. The QR code comes by email and on the website. Install it at home, then switch the line on when the plane lands. Plans start from $4.95 USD. If the phone connects but no data flows, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and see our troubleshooting guide.

Methodology
How we did this comparison
Lotsotravel prices come from our live v3 product API (/api/v3/products?country=GB and ?region=europe), read on 22 October 2026. We quote the VIP price, which is what you pay when you arrive through a link on this blog, and fixed-data plans only. The network claim covers our United Kingdom country plans only (countryCount 1 in the API): every one of them listed Vodafone on that date. Our supplier's catalogue can change, which is what the carrierVerified date tracks.
Opening dates, ticket prices and event dates come from the organisers wherever a primary page exists: the London Museum, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the Lord Mayor's Show, the Tour de France and The R&A. The Bayeux Tapestry and Year of the Normans dates come from VisitEngland's autumn 2026 news release. Absurd City's opening date comes from London x London and its star rating from Time Out. The survey figures come from Hospitality & Catering News's report of the UKinbound survey. Entry rules come from GOV.UK.
What this post does not measure: we ran no speed tests in the UK, we did not meter how much data any app uses, and we do not compare customer support. The plans are data only, with no UK phone number.
