Kimi Antonelli can win the 2026 championship at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on 25 October at the earliest. After finishing fourth in the Singapore sprint on 10 October, he leads on 325 points, 89 ahead of his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, with 175 points left. He cannot win it in Singapore, and 87 more points make him champion whatever anyone else does.
Key takeaways
- Antonelli leads on 325 points with 8 Grand Prix wins. Russell is second on 236.
- 175 points remain: 25 for each of seven Grand Prix wins. No sprints are left.
- Austin on 25 October is the earliest he can win the title. He must outscore Russell by 36 or more across Singapore and Austin.
- 87 more points, about 12 a race, guarantee the title outright.
- Five rivals can still pass him on paper. Oscar Piastri can no longer catch him.
What happened in the Singapore sprint?
Antonelli stretched his lead over his closest rival. He finished fourth, 0.367 seconds behind Charles Leclerc, while Russell crashed out on the first lap after taking the lead at the start. Max Verstappen won the sprint from Lewis Hamilton and Leclerc.
How far ahead is Antonelli in the 2026 standings?
Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 standings by 89 points from George Russell. Lewis Hamilton is 104 behind, Charles Leclerc 128, Max Verstappen 129 and Lando Norris 136.
| Driver | Sprint result | Points before | Points after | Behind Antonelli |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kimi Antonelli | 4th | 320 | 325 | Leader |
| George Russell | Retired | 236 | 236 | 89 |
| Lewis Hamilton | 2nd | 214 | 221 | 104 |
| Charles Leclerc | 3rd | 191 | 197 | 128 |
| Max Verstappen | 1st | 188 | 196 | 129 |
| Lando Norris | 8th | 188 | 189 | 136 |
His lead over Russell grew from 84 to 89. ESPN reports that Russell also starts Sunday's Grand Prix from the back of the grid after an engine change.
Who can still beat Antonelli?
Five drivers can still beat Kimi Antonelli to the 2026 title on paper. The best possible total below is what each would reach by winning all seven remaining Grands Prix. The figures build on the official standings after round 16 plus the provisional sprint result.
| Driver | Points | Best possible total | Most Antonelli can add if that driver wins out |
|---|---|---|---|
| George Russell | 236 | 411 | 85 |
| Lewis Hamilton | 221 | 396 | 70 |
| Charles Leclerc | 197 | 372 | 46 |
| Max Verstappen | 196 | 371 | 45 |
| Lando Norris | 189 | 364 | 38 |
| Oscar Piastri | 128 | 303 | Out: 303 is below 325 |
Every chaser needs to win almost every race, and Antonelli to score very little, at the same time. Antonelli has averaged about 19 points a weekend so far.
How does a driver win the F1 title early?
A driver wins the F1 title early once no rival can pass him, even by winning every race that is left. For Antonelli, that means after each race his lead over every other driver has to be bigger than the points still on offer. If a lead exactly equals the points left, a tie-break decides: most wins, then most second places, according to Formula 1's championship guide.
Seven Grands Prix remain at 25 points for a win. Singapore was the last of six sprint weekends on the sprint calendar, and the fastest-lap point was scrapped from 2025, so no other points are on offer.
Can Antonelli win the title in Singapore?
No, Kimi Antonelli cannot win the 2026 title in Singapore. After the Singapore Grand Prix 150 points remain. Even if Antonelli wins and Russell scores nothing, his lead over Russell is 114, well short of 150.
What does Antonelli need to win the title in Austin?
To win the title in Austin, Kimi Antonelli needs to lead every rival by at least 125 points after that race, because 125 points remain after Austin. Across the Singapore and Austin Grands Prix combined, that means:
| Rival | Gap now | For Antonelli to win the title in Austin |
|---|---|---|
| George Russell | 89 | Antonelli outscores him by 36 or more |
| Lewis Hamilton | 104 | Antonelli outscores him by 21 or more |
| Charles Leclerc | 128 | Leclerc does not outscore Antonelli by 4 or more |
| Max Verstappen | 129 | Verstappen does not outscore Antonelli by 5 or more |
| Lando Norris | 136 | Norris does not outscore Antonelli by 12 or more |
At a lead of exactly 125, the tie-break goes Antonelli's way against all five in these scenarios, because none of them could match his wins and second places.
The simplest route is two wins. Antonelli then reaches 375, and Russell must add 14 points or fewer and Hamilton 29 or fewer across the two races. The other three cannot stop it, because without a win the most they can add is 36.
He does not strictly need to win either race. Two second places, 36 points, are enough if Russell scores nothing and nobody else gains too much. Anything less than 36 from the two races, though, and Austin is off.
If not Austin, when could Antonelli win the title?
If not in Austin, Antonelli can win the title at any later race once his lead is big enough. The lead he needs falls by 25 a race.
| Round | Race | Date | Points left after it | Lead Antonelli needs over every rival |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 | United States GP, Austin | 25 Oct | 125 | 125 |
| 19 | Mexico City GP | 1 Nov | 100 | 100 |
| 20 | Brazilian GP, Sao Paulo | 8 Nov | 75 | 75 |
| 21 | Las Vegas GP | 22 Nov | 50 | 50 |
| 22 | Qatar GP, Lusail | 29 Nov | 25 | 25 |
| 23 | Abu Dhabi GP, Yas Marina | 6 Dec | 0 | More points than anyone |
How many more points does Antonelli need to be sure of the title?
Kimi Antonelli needs 87 more points to be sure of the 2026 title. Russell's best possible total is 411, and a tie at 411 would go to Russell, because seven more wins would give him 10 to Antonelli's 8. At 412, nobody can catch Antonelli, whatever the others do.
87 points over seven races is about 12.4 a race, a little more than a fourth place every weekend. Three wins and a fourth place would also do it. In practice he will need fewer, because Russell and the others will drop points too.
Who wins a tie on points with Antonelli?
Antonelli wins most ties on points, because he has the best record in the field. Antonelli has 8 Grand Prix wins, 3 second places and 2 third places, per the 2026 race results and the official Sepang result. Russell has 3 wins, Norris 2, and Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen 1 each.
A tie at a rival's best possible total would go to Antonelli against Hamilton and Leclerc: winning out would bring each of them to 8 wins, level with Antonelli, and he has more second places. Verstappen would also reach 8 wins, but he has 4 second places to Antonelli's 3, so that tie would depend on whether Antonelli adds a second place along the way. Russell and Norris would finish with 10 and 9 wins, so a tie at their best possible totals would go their way.
Which F1 races are left in 2026?

Six drivers can still win the 2026 F1 title on paper. Oscar Piastri cannot: his best possible total is below Antonelli's current points.
| Driver | Team | Points | Behind leader | Best possible total | Earliest he can be out |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | 325 | Leader | 500 | Earliest title win: Austin, 25 Oct |

What does this maths leave out?
The numbers on this page count points and nothing else. They do not predict which car is fastest, and they carry no odds. Penalties, disqualifications and cancelled races would all move the numbers, and we would rerun them if one happened. The full method sits in the methodology note below.

How we did this comparison
This post calculates championship points only. The base is the formula1.com drivers' standings after round 16 (the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia at Sepang, 4 October 2026), checked against the official race classification. On 10 October 2026 we added the Singapore sprint result from live race coverage, because formula1.com and our own F1 data feed had not yet published the official sprint classification, and stewards were still investigating Lewis Hamilton for a yellow-flag infringement. We will check these figures against the official classification once it is out. Grand Prix win, second and third place counts for the countback come from the 2026 race results in the Jolpica F1 database, which our feed uses, plus the official Sepang classification. Seven Grands Prix remain, and no sprints.
Scoring follows the published 2026 rules: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 for a Grand Prix and no fastest-lap bonus point. A tie on points is settled by countback: most wins, then most second places, and so on. Every scenario was computed by script, and we round per-race averages to one decimal place.
We do not predict car pace, reliability or who will win any race. We do not model penalties, disqualifications, points deductions or cancelled races, and we do not use betting odds. We update this post after each remaining Grand Prix.
