Can Charles Leclerc Still Win the 2026 F1 Championship?

Updated Oct 10, 2026Pricing verified Oct 10, 202610 sources cited

Yes, Charles Leclerc can still win the championship, but only just. He finished third in the Singapore sprint on 10 October 2026 and now has 197 points, 128 behind Kimi Antonelli on 325, with 175 points left. If Leclerc wins all seven remaining Grands Prix, he finishes on 372, and Antonelli must score 46 or fewer.

    Key takeaways

    • Antonelli leads on 325. Leclerc is fourth on 197, 128 behind, with 1 Grand Prix win.
    • 175 points remain: 25 for each of seven Grand Prix wins. No sprints are left.
    • Leclerc's best possible total is 372, one more than Verstappen's. Antonelli can add at most 46.
    • Leclerc can be out after Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix if Antonelli wins and Leclerc finishes ninth or lower.
    • To survive Austin, Leclerc must outscore Antonelli by at least 4 points across Singapore and Austin.

What happened in the Singapore sprint?

Leclerc gained a point on the leader. He held on to third as the two McLarens tangled behind him, and Antonelli finished fourth, 0.367 seconds back.

    DriverSprint resultPoints beforePoints after
    Kimi Antonelli4th320325
    Charles Leclerc3rd191197

The gap fell from 129 to 128. Leclerc's best possible total slipped from 374 to 372, because third paid 6 rather than the 8 for a win, and the most Antonelli can score against a perfect Leclerc fell from 53 to 46.

How far behind Antonelli is Leclerc?

Charles Leclerc is 128 points behind Kimi Antonelli. He is fourth in the 2026 standings on 197 points, while Antonelli leads on 325. These figures are the official standings after round 16 plus the provisional sprint result. The last column shows how many more points each rival could score and still finish behind Leclerc if he reaches his best possible total of 372.

If Leclerc wins everything, the best anyone else can do is second in all seven races, worth 126 points. That takes Russell to 362, 10 short of 372. Antonelli is the only driver who can stop Leclerc winning out.

Leclerc vs Antonelli: how do they compare?

Antonelli is ahead of Charles Leclerc on points and on Grand Prix wins. Win and podium counts come from the 2026 race results and the official Sepang result.

How many points are left in the 2026 F1 season?

There are 175 points left in the 2026 F1 season: seven Grands Prix, each paying 25 for a win down to 1 for tenth, per Formula 1's guide to the Drivers' Championship. Singapore was the last of six sprint weekends on the sprint calendar, and the fastest-lap bonus point was scrapped from 2025, so no other points are on offer.

What does Leclerc need to win the 2026 title?

Charles Leclerc needs to win nearly all of the last seven races, and Antonelli needs to score 46 points or fewer. Each win Leclerc gives up for a second place cuts what Antonelli can afford by 7 points.

4 wins, three 2nds351253.69th or lower every race
3 wins, four 2nds344182.69th or lower every race

In the lower rows another driver wins the races Leclerc does not, and those points count against that driver's own room in the standings table above. Antonelli has averaged about 19 points a weekend so far.

What happens if Leclerc and Antonelli finish level on points?

If Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli finish level on points, the driver with more Grand Prix wins is champion. If wins are level too, second places decide it, and so on down the order, according to Formula 1's championship guide.

A tie at 372 would go Antonelli's way: Leclerc would have 8 wins to Antonelli's 8, and Antonelli has more second places. That is why the table above says "no more than": each figure beats Antonelli outright.

When could Leclerc be knocked out of the title race?

The earliest Charles Leclerc can be knocked out of the 2026 title race is the Singapore Grand Prix on 11 October. Leclerc is out if Antonelli outscores him by 22 or more on Sunday, which pushes the gap to at least 150 with 150 left. Only one combination does that: Antonelli wins and Leclerc finishes ninth or lower. At exactly 150 Leclerc could win only 7 races in total, fewer than Antonelli's 8, so the tie-break would go against him.

Austin is the harder test. After it only 125 points remain, and Leclerc already trails by 128. He survives Austin only if he outscores Antonelli by at least 4 points across Singapore and Austin. If they score the same in those two races, Leclerc is out.

Which F1 races are left in 2026?

Seven races are left in the 2026 F1 season, from Singapore on 11 October to Abu Dhabi on 6 December, per the official 2026 calendar.

What does this maths leave out?

The numbers on this page count points and nothing else. They do not predict which car is fastest, and they carry no odds. Penalties, disqualifications and cancelled races would all move the numbers, and we would rerun them if one happened. The full method sits in the methodology note below.

    Frequently asked questions

Can Charles Leclerc still win the 2026 F1 championship?+
Yes, mathematically. After the Singapore sprint on 10 October 2026, Leclerc has 197 points and Kimi Antonelli leads with 325 (provisional). With 175 points left, Leclerc can reach 372 by winning all seven remaining Grands Prix. Antonelli would then need to score 46 points or fewer.
How many points is Leclerc behind Antonelli?+
Charles Leclerc is 128 points behind Kimi Antonelli after the Singapore sprint on 10 October 2026. Antonelli leads the championship on 325 points and Leclerc is fourth on 197 (provisional).
What does Leclerc need to win the title?+
He needs to win almost every remaining race while Antonelli barely scores. Seven straight wins give him 372 points, and Antonelli would then have to score 46 or fewer, about 7 points a race. With three wins and four second places, Leclerc reaches 344 and Antonelli can score no more than 18 in seven races.
When could Leclerc be mathematically eliminated?+
After the Singapore Grand Prix on 11 October 2026, at the earliest. Leclerc is out if Antonelli outscores him by 22 points or more on Sunday, which only happens if Antonelli wins and Leclerc finishes ninth or lower. If he survives, he is out after Austin unless he outscores Antonelli by at least 4 points across Singapore and Austin.
Who wins if Leclerc and Antonelli tie on points?+
The driver with more Grand Prix wins takes the title, then the driver with more second places, and so on. Antonelli has 8 wins and 3 second places. Leclerc has 1 win and 1 second place. A tie at 372 would go Antonelli's way: Leclerc would have 8 wins to Antonelli's 8, and Antonelli has more second places.
How many races are left in the 2026 F1 season?+
Seven Grands Prix are left after the Singapore sprint: Singapore (11 October), Austin (25 October), Mexico City (1 November), Sao Paulo (8 November), Las Vegas (22 November), Qatar (29 November) and Abu Dhabi (6 December). They are worth 175 points to a driver who wins them all. There are no sprints left.
    Who is leading the 2026 F1 championship?+
Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leads on 325 points after the Singapore sprint on 10 October 2026 (provisional). George Russell is second on 236, Lewis Hamilton third on 221, Charles Leclerc fourth on 197, Max Verstappen fifth on 196 and Lando Norris sixth on 189.

    Methodology

    How we did this comparison

This post calculates championship points only. The base is the formula1.com drivers' standings after round 16 (the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia at Sepang, 4 October 2026), checked against the official race classification. On 10 October 2026 we added the Singapore sprint result from live race coverage, because formula1.com and our own F1 data feed had not yet published the official sprint classification, and stewards were still investigating Lewis Hamilton for a yellow-flag infringement. We will check these figures against the official classification once it is out. Grand Prix win, second and third place counts for the countback come from the 2026 race results in the Jolpica F1 database, which our feed uses, plus the official Sepang classification. Seven Grands Prix remain, and no sprints.

Scoring follows the published 2026 rules: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 for a Grand Prix and no fastest-lap bonus point. A tie on points is settled by countback: most wins, then most second places, and so on. Every scenario was computed by script, and we round per-race averages to one decimal place.

We do not predict car pace, reliability or who will win any race. We do not model penalties, disqualifications, points deductions or cancelled races, and we do not use betting odds. We update this post after each remaining Grand Prix.
